Honoring Our Veterans: A Call for Restoration in Recognition and Gratitude

It is deeply concerning to witness the decline in recognition and honor extended to our veterans, especially in recent years. Many communities, including some churches, have begun to overlook the service and sacrifices made by those who have served our country. Since November 2020, this troubling trend has been more apparent, and it is disheartening to see a decline in the appreciation that veterans so rightfully deserve. As a nation, we must renew our commitment to honor and recognize these brave individuals who have dedicated their lives to protecting our freedoms.

The Six Branches of the U.S. Armed Forces

The United States military is made up of six distinguished branches of service, each with its own unique role in defending our nation. These branches include:

  1. United States Army – The largest branch, responsible for land-based military operations.
  2. United States Navy – The branch that safeguards our waters, provides power projection, and maintains global security.
  3. United States Marine Corps – The rapid-response force that specializes in amphibious warfare and rapid deployment.
  4. United States Coast Guard – Responsible for protecting our coastlines and ensuring maritime safety and security.
  5. United States Air Force – The branch responsible for air and space superiority, as well as global precision strike capabilities.
  6. United States Space Force – The newest branch, tasked with protecting American and allied interests in space.

These branches, both active duty and reserve, work tirelessly to safeguard the United States and its citizens. In addition to these services, there are also specialized military units that support our country’s defense.

The National Guard and State Defense Forces

The National Guard plays a vital role as part of the United States military but is activated at the state level. When local communities face emergencies, disasters, or a state of emergency, the Governor of each state can call upon the National Guard to assist. Additionally, the National Guard can be federalized by the President of the United States during times of national need.

Many states also maintain State Guard military units, such as those in Texas, New Mexico, Florida, Virginia, and several others. These state forces serve a critical role in supporting local defense and disaster response, ensuring that both state and national needs are met in times of crisis.

The Importance of Restoring Veterans’ Recognition

As we move forward, it is essential that we reinstate a sense of reverence and gratitude toward our veterans—those who have served in both peacetime and wartime. Veterans have made extraordinary sacrifices to protect our freedom, security, and way of life. Their unwavering commitment has ensured that our country remains a beacon of hope for the world. Sadly, too often these sacrifices go unrecognized, whether in communities or in places of worship. It is time for a new American spirit—one that honors the valor and dedication of our veterans, and acknowledges their pivotal role in our nation's history.

A Bright Spot: Businesses and Community Support

While some institutions may have faltered in their recognition of veterans, many businesses across the country continue to honor those who serve. Veterans are offered special discounts, services, and, in many cases, free meals at both national chain restaurants and local dining establishments. These gestures, though small, go a long way in showing appreciation for those who have sacrificed so much.

Veterans Day: A Time for Reflection and Gratitude

Veterans Day provides an opportunity for all of us to reflect on the dedication of military personnel, both past and present. It is a day to honor those who have served in conflicts throughout history and those who continue to protect our nation today. Whether in times of peace or war, veterans have exhibited unparalleled strength, resilience, and a commitment to the values that make this country great.

Let us all take a moment to remember and thank our veterans for their service. Whether through a simple “thank you” or by supporting initiatives that honor them, we can all play a a part in ensuring that their sacrifices are never forgotten.
