Honoring Our Nurses On National Nurses Day - And Every Day

I have been happy to see America join hands over the last few months appreciating all those who work to ensure our communities have the healthcare we need, particularly our nurses. With today being National Nurses Day and the start of National Nurses Week, let’s raise our voices in appreciation even louder.

From coast to coast, nurses have played a defining role on the frontlines of the COVID-19 outbreak. Many were at the bedside of our friends and family members as they battled this terrible illness. Although these patients were “in isolation,” nurses were there so they would not be isolated from hope. They gave both their extraordinary expertise and compassion, and we are all incredibly thankful.

What’s more, there were nurses working equally heroically with others in need of care, valiantly guarding their health. At City of Hope, our nurses helped cancer patients get the treatments they needed, ensuring they were safe and protected. It was no small feat that City of Hope was one of the nation’s most prepared cancer hospitals in the country during the COVID crisis, and our nurses deserve much of the credit.

Another reason we celebrate Nurses Day is to recognize the nursing profession and its contributions throughout the ages. It’s no coincidence that Nurses Week concludes on the birthday of perhaps the world’s most famous nurse, Florence Nightingale. To quote her, No matter how difficult the days may get, never forget the reason you became a nurse.” If you or someone you know is contemplating becoming a nurse, we encourage you to explore this truly noble profession. You will truly stand on the shoulders of greatness.

Without a doubt, in 2020, nurses rose to an enormous challenge. However, every year, they give their all, demonstrating what professionalism, courage, and compassion are all about. Thank you, nurses. We salute you and honor you this day, and every day.
