With Memorial Day soon upon us, I would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge my hero. Uncle Darroch, husband of my Aunt Beth and an initial member of the 10th Mountain Regiment made up of world class skiers which Uncle Darroch was, serving as a First Lieutenant fighting and getting wounded in Italy during World War Two. And like many others who serve to protect us, he and his skiing buddies had an exciting and rewarding career after the war.
?Skiing associations subsequently contend that veterans of the 10th Mountain Division had a substantial effect on the post-World War II development of skiing as a vacation industry and major sport. Ex-soldiers from the 10th laid out ski hills, designed?ski lifts became ski coaches, racers, instructors,?patrollers shop owners, and?filmmakers They wrote and published ski magazines, opened?ski schools improved ski equipment, and developed?ski resorts. Up to 2,000 of the division's troops were involved in skiing-related professions after the war, and at least 60 ski resorts were founded by men of the division.?"The 10th Mountain Division was the only unit in the history of the US military to use wartime skills to promote a civilian pastime."
?Uncle Darroch returned from the War, continuing his passion for skiing in the Northwest, founding and oil distribution business with one of his skiing buddies, and reuniting with Auntie Beth and their black lab Sooty. Unfortunately, wounds received in the War would claim his life way too soon, and I still miss him to this day.
?So, celebrate Memorial Day with your hero, whoever they may be. Honor them with thanks, a hug, or remembering them in your heart.
