Today we celebrate the Feast Day of the Virgen de Guadalupe, the day of the apparition of La Virgen (Mary, Mother of Jesus) to Juan Diego. La Virgen de Guadalupe symbolizes the Mother of Mexico for many people like me. She was everywhere in my childhood home, and I've gladly carried that tradition in my home for my two kids. This is the first year we will honor the Virgin Mary, the "Mother of the Faithful," while reflecting on my mom, whom we lost earlier this year. To say this day has a deeper meaning, as have many holidays since her passing, is an understatement.
Both la Virgen of Guadalupe and my mom are symbols of strength for me. Their legacies are reminders not to give up, and as a mom, a leader, and a mentor, I will continue to do that. Any person who takes it upon themselves to raise others as a mother figure deserves to be celebrated and cherished.
As I was thinking about the special meaning of this day, I remembered a trip to Mexico City years ago. I visited the Basilica and purchased a large portrait of la Virgen. Not wanting to check the artwork, I tried to carry it on. At first, the flight attendant pushed back, telling me I couldn't carry it on. However, she understood once I said it was a portrait of la Virgen de Guadalupe. She took the picture with her for safekeeping for the flight. That is how universally valued her image is.
My home and community are full of love as we reflect, remember, and celebrate today. Of course, I miss my mom, but I have no regrets about the love we had between us. I wish for a little more time, a few more hugs, and maybe that trip to Miami we had always talked about taking. But much like my relationship with la Virgen de Guadalupe, I know my relationship with my mom will continue to deepen and evolve for many years.
