Honoring Memorial Day: A Personal Reflection
As a former Air Force brat, immersed in military culture throughout my childhood, I learned firsthand that service matters. Self-sacrifice for the betterment of all is the greatest gift one can give. Every morning on base, traffic would stop and airmen would stand and salute as the American flag was raised. And every evening, that moment of honor and reflection was held again as the flag was lowered. These daily rituals instilled in me a deep respect for those who serve and sacrifice for our country.
I've visited many military memorials in my life, each one a solemn reminder of the cost of our freedoms. My father, who was severely injured during his service in the Vietnam conflict, always taught me that war is not something to be viewed favorably. He was clear that war is what happens when reason and compromise give way to resolution through force. His experiences and injuries served as a poignant reminder of the harsh realities of conflict.
Memorial Day is a time for us to honor those who have made the ultimate sacrifice. It’s a day to reflect on the selflessness and bravery of our servicemen and women. Their willingness to put themselves in harm's way for the sake of others is a testament to the highest form of service.

Today, as we gather with family and friends, let's take a moment to remember and honor those who have fallen. Their sacrifice is the foundation of our freedom and the reason we can enjoy the liberties we often take for granted. Let’s also recognize the families they left behind, whose lives are forever changed by the loss of their loved ones.
Service to our country is a profound commitment. It is a legacy that continues to inspire and guide us. On this Memorial Day, I am reminded of the lessons my father and the military community imparted to me: that service and sacrifice are the bedrock of our nation's strength.
To all those who have served and sacrificed, and to their families, thank you. Your legacy of courage and dedication is honored and remembered. Let us strive to live up to the values you fought to protect, ensuring that your sacrifices were not in vain.
