Honoring a MD Legend- THANK YOU!

Public service often comes with long hours and sacrifice, but also comes with a rewarding sense of knowing the work we do can positively impact the lives of the people we serve. One of the most rewarding aspects of my 2 decades in the Department of Transportation was my time working with Senate President Miller. From working with him on large and small projects across the state, to community meetings and events like the one in this picture,  to the time we spent just sitting in the Senate Chamber during my confirmation process talking about where I would take the Department if confirmed and reminiscing about all we worked on together over the years. Some people just want to serve, to me he exemplified service. We met that day in the chamber because his health was making it more uncomfortable for him to move around, but he continued to serve. We spoke by phone a few times after my confirmation, mostly about how things were going and some progress reports on all things happening in transportation in the areas he represented. I will cherish every moment I spent with him over the years. He was gracious and kind, always challenged me to think about things from other perspectives and to be the best “me” I could be with every interaction. My interactions with him always made me think hard, grow and often smile. As we honor his memory, I will carry those lessons with me forever. 

Today, I simple want to thank him for his service and his counsel, and thank his family for sharing him with us all these years.
