Honoring the Life and Work of Dr. Paul Farmer

Honoring the Life and Work of Dr. Paul Farmer

We are all deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Paul Farmer. In his book, Pathologies of Power, he referenced the core belief in liberation theology that people of faith must make a “preferential option for the poor.” He went on to observe that “most often, diseases themselves make a preferential option for the poor.” These past two years of the COVID pandemic have gravely illustrated the impact of poverty on global health.

Farmer spent his life devoting himself to populations struggling against poverty. He was an inspiration for all of us. His work continues at Partners in Health and at community health centers worldwide that commit themselves to care for underserved populations.

We’ve heard from some of our staff that the reason they are doing their work at CHC is because of the inspiration that Paul provided in his work and writings. They and so many others are all part of his legacy, which will make our world better.?

His legacy lives on in so many of us working in the health center movement. His life shows us what is possible. May we honor his legacy by truly doing the work required to eliminate inequities.

We see the evidence of his inspiration writ large across our organization every day. A giant among us. Powerful eulogy, Mark.
