Honoring a Legend: Atul Sir’s Extraordinary Legacy

Honoring a Legend: Atul Sir’s Extraordinary Legacy

???????????????? ?? ????????????: ???????? ??????’?? ?????????????????????????? ????????????

Dear Atul sir,

Some leaders leave their mark on an organization. Some transform industries. And then there are those rare individuals who touch lives, elevate professions and create ripples that extend far beyond their immediate world.

For me - and for so many others - you are one of those rare individuals, Atul Sir. It has been an honor to work under your exceptional leadership. As you retired yesterday after an extraordinary 33-year career at ???????????? ??????????????, I feel compelled to celebrate your remarkable journey - a story that deserves to be shared with the procurement profession, the furniture industry and the ecosystem at large.

Your journey began in 1992, but you didn’t just build a career - you built a community. You transformed procurement from a transactional function into a strategic force. The ???????????? ???????????????? Initiative you pioneered in 2007 stands as a testament to your vision. Through it, you redefined supplier relationships, turning them into partnerships built on trust, respect and collaboration. This wasn’t just about achieving better results - it was about fostering an environment where suppliers felt valued as co-creators, where innovation thrived and where even cost benefits were voluntarily shared by suppliers. It’s a rare achievement, one that speaks volumes about the kind of trust and goodwill you inspired.

The impact of this initiative extended far beyond the organization. The Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) heralded it as an industry role model, recognizing it as a benchmark for procurement excellence. It won numerous awards, celebrating its success in redefining how businesses and suppliers could work together. Most importantly, it became a blueprint for transforming relationships from purely transactional to deeply collaborative, setting a new standard for strategic sourcing across the industry.

Your ability to think ahead and innovate shone again with the ?????????????? ???????????????????? in 2010, which was a first for the Indian Furniture Industry. Bringing together 49 suppliers across five clusters was a groundbreaking step that many still look to. It wasn’t just about improving quality, reducing lead times, or optimizing costs (though it achieved all of these). It was about creating a thriving ecosystem where suppliers worked together, learned from one another and grew collectively. You showed us all what collaboration truly means and the incredible results it can bring.

But for me and for so many of us who’ve had the privilege to work with you, your leadership was about much more than these milestones. It was about the way you made us feel - the way you inspired us to think bigger, to be better and to believe in the power of collaboration.

To me, your mentorship has always been like the wisdom of a bamboo farmer. A bamboo farmer nurtures and waters the ground for years, building unseen roots that grow strong and deep, until one day the bamboo shoots up and stands tall. This, to me, is how you guided us. You invested in people with patience, helping us build the foundations we needed to succeed - not just in the immediate moment but for the long term. You taught us to be curious, to trust the process and to approach challenges with fresh perspectives.

You empowered us to explore, encouraged us to grow and reminded us that success is built on respect, collaboration and hard work. Your mentorship wasn’t just about solving problems - it was about helping us see the bigger picture and find our own paths forward.

And now, as you move on to new adventures, we can’t help but feel the bittersweetness of this moment. All good things must come to an end and though we know this is the start of an exciting chapter for you, it’s hard to imagine our days without your guidance, your wisdom and your steady presence. You’ve been so much more than a leader - you’ve been a mentor, a visionary and a source of unwavering support.

We will miss you deeply, but we are comforted by the legacy you leave behind. Your values, your lessons and your spirit will continue to guide us as we move forward. And as you embark on this well-deserved new journey, we know that your influence will extend far beyond the walls of this organization.

Thank you, Atul Sir, for everything. For the trust you placed in us, the belief you had in our potential and the way you taught us to see not just what is - but what could be. Your story will always be a part of ours.

Here’s wishing you endless joy, fulfillment and success in the years ahead. And while you may no longer walk these halls, your legacy will always be felt and your lessons will remain with us, always.

With heartfelt gratitude and respect,

Shreekant

Atul Sohani Sir I wanted to take a moment to express my heartfelt gratitude for the invaluable experiences and learning under your leadership. You have not only taught us the basics of quality improvement but also guided us toward adopting an advanced approach to quality leadership—a perspective I will carry with me throughout my career. Your emphasis on detailed root cause analysis and prioritising 'eliminating the defect' over containment challenged us to think deeper and refine our skills. What once felt intimidating ?? —reviews and presentations on improvement projects—transformed into some of the most enriching experiences of my professional journey. ?? I take immense pride in the stories of what I could accomplish in this short span under your guidance. Your lessons on storytelling—on how to effectively articulate achievements—will remain etched in my mind and continue to inspire me in every step of my life. Thank you for being an incredible mentor and for shaping me into the professional I am today. I will always be indebted to you for the wisdom and direction you have imparted. Wishing you continued success and looking forward to staying in touch.
