Honoring International Women’s Day - Supreme Court Judge Ruth Bader Ginsburg

Gender Equality

In honor of #InternationalWomensDay, last night I watched the movie called On the Basis of Sex. It is about Supreme Court Judge Ruth Bader Ginsburg and her triumphant accomplishments in helping to eliminate discrimination while creating equality, not just for women but for men as well. She is intelligent, forward thinking, courageous, and possesses integrity and perseverance

The best part of the movie is when she addresses the judges with her rebuttal in response to Attorney James Bozarth’s argument to his statement in “radical social change”. Ruth Bader Ginsburg summarizes history due to the lack of social change going back as far as 100 years, (from 1972).

She talks about how Myra Bradwell wanted to be a lawyer and was denied because she was a woman, even though she filled all the requirements. Bader Ginsburg speaks about how women in Oregon were denied working overtime. She tells how many outdated laws there were at that time that differentiate on the basis of gender and how the hurdles would stand in the way to future generations goals. She continues by requesting the judges to set new standards in updating laws that will benefit children in the future.

When her allotted time was up, Judge Holloway said that he wanted to give her more time to hear what she had to say.

She states her case by reasoning the purpose of the law she is attempting to change is not to protect a certain group of people, nor to discriminate against another group. The law should help all people equally. She requests the judges to protect the morality of the country to change. People were prohibited by law against opportunities created on beliefs based on their traditional gender skills

She gives the judges great reason to change the law by telling them that they hold the authority and control to establish new standards that will get us started and that they can correct this unethical law.

She won the case Charles E. Moritz v. Commissioner of Internal Revenue and a total of five out of six gender discrimination cases.

What is also imperative about Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s accomplishments is that she had a strong, supporting husband with an open mind by her side who allowed her to accomplish goals that would otherwise be holding people back from their dreams and making the World a better place to live.
