As we celebrate #HispanicHeritageMonth in the US, I am moved to recognize the incredible contributions of many Hispanic men and women. Heading the list for me is Justice Sotomayor. Justice Sotomayor’s contributions in charting our country’s history cannot be overestimated! She shares the heavy burden of ensuring that the country I choose to be a citizen of, the country I am incredibly proud of and the country I love- continues to be the country that I want for my grandchildren.
Sonia Sotomayor , the first Hispanic Supreme Court Justice, has always been an inspiration to me.?Her journey from the Bronx, born to Puerto Rican parents, to the highest court in the land is a testament to the strength of determination, intellect, and a deep commitment to justice. Throughout her career, Justice Sotomayor has been a fierce advocate for civil rights, equity, and fairness. Her voice on the Supreme Court reflects not only her keen legal mind but also her lived experiences—experiences that resonate with not only Hispanics but also the many marginalized communities in the US.
Justice Sotomayor’s life is a testament to what grit and authenticity combined with incredible intellect can achieve. She said, “I am an ordinary person who has been blessed with extraordinary opportunities and experiences.” Her humility, combined with her trailblazing career, shows us that barriers can be broken, dreams can be achieved, and change is always possible.
Every encounter I have had with Justice Sotomayor has been uplifting and empowering- not only because of her keen intellect but because of her humanity, her deep sense of care of people and her humility. She reminds us that Hispanic Americans are essential to the fabric of our nation—their leadership, their advocacy, and their service have enriched our country and each our lives.

As we honor the rich history, vibrant culture, and significant contributions of Hispanic communities across the United States, lets pause to reflect recognize the vital roles that Hispanic Americans have played—and continue to play—in shaping our nation- whether in politics, business, education, science, or the arts. Leaders like César Chávez, Dolores Huerta, Sonia Sotomayor, and countless others have not only paved the way for future generations but have also enriched our nation’s identity with their dedication to justice, equality, and progress.
But despite this impressive contribution to our country, the gap between the Hispanic labor force and executive representation is wider than for any other group. Today in the US, Latinos make up about 18.7% of the workforce yet only 3.2% of CEO’s in S&P 500 companies identify as Hispanic. The statistics of Hispanics on boards is also bleak: Hispanics represent barely 5% of directors on boards of Fortune 1000 companies.
So what can organizations do to increase the representation of Hispanics in senior leadership positions and foster a culture of inclusion where our Hispanic colleagues feel they belong and can excel as a result of it?
