Honoring Dr. King's legacy

I often talk about “the power of we.”?In other words, we can do so much more collectively than we can as?individuals. Yet there is often?a?galvanizing force or person who inspires us to do more. For many others and for me personally, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.?serves as this?societal?lightning rod.?

No one can debate?the progress made since?Dr. King?delivered?a?well-known, historic?speech about his dream for a better United States of America. But we have work to do as we?seek?to make Dr. King’s dream a reality.?So, what can one person do??Each and every one of us can start today. Today is not only a day to?reflect on the life and legacy of?Dr.?King, but it is also a day for action. I believe we all – individually and collectively – have a role to play in honoring?his dream.?

Dr. King famously said,?“Everybody can be great...?because anybody can serve.”?My dedication to service was built?into?my?psyche?as a child growing up in South?Carolina. I watched my parents volunteer and serve others in the church,?community?and beyond.?Giving back and?living?a?life of impact is something I?seek?to model not only during the 3rd?week of January, but?throughout the year.??

On this special day of observance of one of the most impactful Americans in history, I hope that you are encouraged to serve?in whatever capacity?you?can – whether?it’s?writing a thank you card to someone?who’s?impacted?you or?holding the door for a stranger.?No act of service is too small.??
