As we celebrate one of the foremost civil rights leaders, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s birthday, and honor his legacy, we must remain mindful of the opportunity to lead, serve, engage, and volunteer within our communities and spheres of influence.
This year's theme for MLK Day is January 16, as announced by The King Center, is "It Starts with Me: Cultivating a Beloved Community Mindset to Transform Unjust Systems."
As you reflect today, will you consider these quotes on the essence of Leadership, sacrifice, courage, commitment, equity, and justice?
- "The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy." — Martin Luther King Jr.
- "When you are right, you cannot be too radical; when you are wrong, you cannot be too conservative." — Martin Luther King Jr.
- "Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere." — Martin Luther King Jr.
- "In the end, we will remember not the words of our enemies, but the silence of our friends." — Martin Luther King Jr.
- "Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter." Martin Luther King Jr.
- "All men are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality." — Martin Luther King Jr.
- "I believe that unarmed truth and unconditional love will have the in reality. That is why right, temporarily defeated, is stronger than evil triumphant." — Martin Luther King Jr.
- "If a man is called to be a street sweeper, he should sweep streets even as Michelangelo painted, or Beethoven composed music, or Shakespeare wrote poetry. He should sweep streets so well that all the hosts of heaven and earth will pause to say, here lived a great street sweeper who did his job well." — Martin Luther King Jr.
- "We must learn to live together as brothers (sisters) or perish together as fools." — Martin Luther King, Jr.
- "Now, I say to you today, my friends, even though we face the difficulties of today and tomorrow, I still have a dream. It is a dream deeply rooted in the American dream. I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: — 'We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal." — Martin Luther King Jr.
