Black History Month commemorates the rich history and contributions of Black Americans. This year, as we celebrate the achievements of the past, we’re also taking a look at the current landscape and the ongoing fight for racial justice.

From the Civil Rights Movement to the Black arts and culture movement, Black Americans have played a significant role in shaping our country and the world. From trailblazers like Harriet Tubman, who helped lead hundreds of slaves to freedom through the Underground Railroad, to modern-day activists like the late John Lewis, who dedicated his life to fighting for civil rights, Black Americans have made a lasting impact on society. One of the most inspiring elements of these movements have been the way it has been led by Black activists, organizers, and leaders. These individuals have utilized their voices to demand structural change and to draw attention to the ongoing fight for racial equality.

Black History Month serves as a reminder of the importance of activism and the need to continue fighting for racial equity. In recent years, we’ve seen a renewed energy and momentum in the Black Lives Matter movement. People of all colors and backgrounds have joined together to demand change, from the Black Lives Matter Plaza in Washington, D.C. to the streets of cities and towns around the country.

There is still work to be done, as disparities still exist in crucial areas such as healthcare, education, and employment. It is the collective responsibility of society to persist in the struggle for fairness and justice. As we reflect on the contributions of Black Americans and the ongoing fight for racial justice, let’s also remember that the work doesn’t end in February. Black history IS American history, and it’s up to all of us to ensure that the legacy of Black Americans continues to be honored and celebrated, every day of the year.

So this Black History Month, let’s take the time to celebrate the achievements of the past, while also committing to creating a brighter future for all. Whether it’s through activism, education, or simply being an ally, there are many ways to get involved and make a difference.
