The Hong Kong French Film Festival is coming
Despite the sheer preponderance of French citizens in Hong Kong (as any casual glimpse of Sheung Wan or SoHo would say), it’s easy to forget the long-term influence of Europa’s beret-clad brigade on Hong Kong’s long-term history. Beside gastronomic delights, one area of influence – oddly enough – has been cinema; cop noir, Mise-en-scène, and wonky angles may no longer be the norm, but the New Wave of Canto-cinema has a lot to thank the Gallic speaking community.
This year is the 44th Hong Kong-French Film Festival (my, how time flies) – offering a variety of thrillers, documentaries, comedies and animated movies for the delectation of viewers. Beginning next Wednesday and running for a month, the likes of documentary “Je Suis Charlie (L’Humour à mort)” – I am Charlie, Comedy and Death – about the terrorist attack on irreverent Parisian magazine Charlie Hebdo, and Cannes award-winning “La Loi du Marché” – The Measure of a Man – about the responsibilities a man must undertake to keep his morals or his position in society.
The Hong Kong French Film Festival begins Nov 18th and ends Dec 10th. Check out its website (hkfrenchfilmfestival.com) to find out more.
