Honey…call the Kids!!

A Rare Opportunity to View a Real Living Superhero...

NASA astronaut Frank Rubio this week returned from a 371-day stint on the International Space Station, marking the third longest single space flight by a human (top two spots were earned by Russian cosmonauts on Mir in the ‘90s). Pressing the limits of human endurance in extreme environments is fraught with significant personal risk and sacrifice, not only in the act itself, but in what it took to get there. A look at lieutenant colonel Frank Rubio’s bio (appended below) appears to be four amazing, high-achievement careers stuffed into one. What he has accomplished is breathtaking. The drive, focus, courage and hard work that positioned him for this mission and it’s mishaps is inspiring--he was supposed to return six months ago until a space rock (micrometeoroid) hit the station, rupturing a coolant line leaking, leading to the station leaking into space. This extended Rubio’s stay 220 miles above earth, hurtling 17,500 mph for another six months, finally returning earthside this week. Amidst social and political chaos, Frank is a heartening reminder of so many awesome people in our world doing amazing things. These people and their achievements receive far too little attention, blocked out by the storm clouds of major media antagonism designed to feed unrest. Well, rest assured, the positive human spirit is alive and well and embodied in people like Frank. Call the kids. This is one they should see.
