The Honey Drop #20: Stop the multitask

The Honey Drop #20: Stop the multitask

I felt a headache forming.

It was just a regular Wednesday morning.

But I was trying to multitask.

Slathering peanut butter onto bread for my kids' sandwiches. Mentally scheduling my day down to the minute. Checking comments on my LinkedIn post. Pondering whether to binge watch the rest of season two of White Lotus, or relish one episode at a time.

And surprise! Multitasking?isn't?a thing. It's not possible.

I would've been wiser to just make the sando.

Knife. PB. Bread (with the edges cut off, of course).

We try and cram tons of activities into one moment, and it just never works.

And hey, guess what? Same thing goes for our marketing.

When we jam our content with too many stories, features, benefits, CTAs, or updates, we overwhelm our customers. We want our marketing and advertising to leave our audience with curiosity, delight, or excitement.

Not a migraine.

1/ COPY IN THE WILD - KILLER CREAMERY

The welcome email is a classic place where marketers love to multitask. It's the first encounter a user has with a brand in their inbox, so we think, "let's make it count!" Let's put it ALL in...

Nice to meet you!

Here's our origin story!

These are our brand values!

These are our ingredients!

These are more ingredients!

Use this coupon code!

Shop our bestsellers!

Shop our other products!

Shop these products too!

Become a brand ambassador!

Buy our merch!

Follow us on social!

Tag us on social!

I got a headache just typing that.

Killer Creamery does the opposite. They keep it simple. They take their primary feature – zero sugar – and double down on it.

Killer Creamery welcome email

Killer finds a few simple ways to get their low sugar message across. But they stay focused.

Also note the single CTA: shop in store. Use that coupon and go buy some yummy sugar-free ice cream in person.

??? ?

2/ QUICK TIP: stop the multitasking madness!

Make this your new rule of thumb for any messaging.

One single focus.

One message.

One CTA.

??? ?

?? You can use this rubric and do a mini audit to improve what you've already got.

1. Pick a piece of content that's not performing so hot for you.

2. Take note of how many?things?you're covering. Are you mentioning multiple benefits? Giving more than one CTA? Including more than one link?

3. Re-write that content with a streamlined focus: one main message and one CTA.

??? ?

3/ DEEP THOUGHTS

"I am foolish enough to face any challenges that might be foolish enough to face me.”

— Dwight (from the Office)

??? ?

Take it one thing at a time, and drink your water. Keeps the headaches away.

Ideas & Words to Go With Them

You know, don’t you, that repeated studies by celebrated neurologists have shown that the human brain is incapable of multitasking? It’s just not wired that way—not yours, not mine, not anyone’s. Oh, we can TRY to multitask, and we might even think we’re succeeding, but all we’re really doing is several things poorly and slowly. But, alas, the naked emperor will continue to flaunt his extravagant raiment and ignore the voice of reason shouting from the sidelines. But thanks for shouting just the same.

Gorgeous graphic Chrissy! I tell my clients the only time they can multitask is when the washer is going, the dryer is going, the dishwasher is going, and they are sitting at their desk working on one thing.
