Honda’s environmental playbook

Honda’s environmental playbook

The auto industry is experiencing a watershed moment. The transition to electrification continues its rapid pace and meeting the needs of consumers in this quickly evolving environment presents challenges. At Honda, we’ve always embraced change and tackled challenges in our effort to keep improving.

As far back as the 1960’s, we introduced our Blue Skies for Our Children initiative. The goal is to continually address global environmental issues for the benefit of future generations. We do this by focussing our efforts on improving the technological development and manufacturing in all our products at every Honda facility and workplace in the world. We are taking on these global challenges toward the pursuit of a ‘net zero’ environmental impact.

We’ve been clear that our path to electrification encompasses a North America-wide strategy that is focused and measured. It includes increasing our hybrid-electric vehicle output as we move to further electrification and by retro-fitting our Honda of Canada Mfg. plants for building these new electrified products. This will play a critical role in reducing our greenhouse gas emissions and achieving our goals of 100% zero-emission vehicle sales in North America by 2040 and carbon neutrality for our global operations by 2050. This is a monumental challenge as Honda makes more than just cars and trucks. As the largest engine manufacturer on Earth, we need to develop technological advancements in rapid succession that impact our lawnmowers, marine engines, and jets as well.

Despite our spirited efforts and commitment to an electrified future Honda cannot do this successfully alone. The development of better, faster and environmentally friendly battery technology, a more robust vehicle charging infrastructure, further incentives for greater consumer adaptation of electric vehicles, and concerns about consumer affordability and industry profitability require the help of various governments and an updated regulatory environment to achieve. While this takes shape, Honda has formed joint-venture partnerships with companies like Sony and LG Energy Solution and together, we’ve set in motion plans that will accelerate our electric vehicle development and advanced battery manufacturing.??

Today, Honda offers one of the most fuel efficient and least polluting vehicle fleets available, we have introduced hybrid technology to our snowblower lineup, we’re pioneering swappable battery powered motorcycles and we have implemented a national program to help hundreds of Honda and Acura dealers reduce their energy consumption. We realize we have a responsibility to our planet while we continue to make products that consumers want and are looking for.

Without a doubt, Honda’s path to a ‘net-zero’ environmental impact is on a global scale and one of the most challenging journeys we have faced. We have aggressive goals and ambitious plans, but our spirt remains as we embrace the future in a rapidly changing world.
