At this point in my career after so many startups, a new startup idea has to really grab me to be compelling enough to capture some of my attention. Bonus Homes was an idea that started building momentum around me over several months, and just couldn’t fade into the background. One of its most exciting aspects was that it would work and be a better solution for customers in any market condition - a true all-weather business opportunity. And that attribute of an opportunity should not be under-appreciated.

Bonus was a company that clearly needed to exist. And as we identified some key people ( Kyle Kamrooz Jason Whitt Mallory Maske Josh Hemsley Adam Zeffer ) to join us to co-found it, it was remarkable how things worked out - their availability, their complementary skills, and their personal connections to the idea. We literally solved the right founding team and right timing challenges up front. So you can probably understand why my early excitement is so high.

So what is Bonus?

Bonus is a new way to build more wealth by being a multi-time homeowner, which is the path many of us take along our homeowner journey.?

I’ve had the good fortune of being a homeowner for over 25 years in 3 different cities, and it’s been a profitable endeavor, as any property I’ve sold has been worth a lot more than what I paid for it. I’ve also been able to navigate through a couple economic downturns as well, and not sell a house at bottom of the market, even when it may have appeared in the short term that I overpaid for the house.

Every year, millions of existing homeowners buy a new house, and in order to do it, the vast majority sell their current house, so they can buy their next one. And for most of them, this seems like the only option they have - sell their house. Over the last decade new companies have emerged to make it even easier and more convenient to sell, knowing that their eye is now on the new prize - the new house. And yet one thing is certain - if you sell your house today, you’ll never receive any additional value from it. And when you check online in 5 years to answer “what ever happened to that house?,” you’ll be frustrated that you didn’t hold onto it. I’ve experienced that multiple times.

We believed that there had to be a better way to help homeowners capture at least some future value from their homes while still allowing them to buy additional homes. We created Bonus as a partnership instrument with homeowners, so they can both buy their next home and keep their current one, without any hassles or challenges. And it’s been so fulfilling to know we’re becoming a long-term wealth-building partner with homeowners. The gratitude and excitement we’ve already felt from our first set of partners (mainly young couples) has been remarkable.

When you’re a homeowner, value from it compounds over time, and too often we don’t retain that ownership for as long as we could or should. Bonus is going to build incremental wealth for tens of thousands of homeowners, by enabling them to earn a bonus for holding onto their homes for 5, 10 or more years longer.
