Homeless Students

The word homelessness sounds hopeless and distressing, but it is a reality that impacts American’s society on a large scale especially when it is young and innocent children that are suffering daily. To address homelessness implementing and interventions building awareness regarding the issue of homeless students how it impacts the community. Assisting in organizing meetings and conferences addressing how important it is for students suffering from homelessness to be incorporated in the school system with full participation, emphasizing encouraging extracurricular activities.  

Problem Related to Education of Homeless Student

The issue of homeless students has increased over the years; getting them all enrolled and maintaining attendance practice is an ongoing problem. Accordingly, to Education for Homeless Student and Youth (EHCY), Since 2014, the homeless student population has increased to 1,301,239 from 679,724 for the state of Washington alone.

How it Impacts Education and Needs

Homeless students have increased since 2015 that has effective more than sixty percent of the minority population of Black African Americans, Native Americans/Alaska Indians along with natives of Hawaiian/Pacific Islanders. Students that are going through homelessness are being expelled or punished twice as often then other students not impacted by homelessness. Most students that are experiencing homelessness live in the bigger city of the state of Washington such as Seattle, Spokane, Yakima just to name a few. Barriers that surround homelessness can create problems for student enrollment school changes happen. There are no medical records for students that often lack the fact of a birth certificate. Requirements for extracurricular participation warrant that the points are addressed despite not having proper documentation. The McKinney-Vento Act states the existence of enrolling children into school immediately. Homeless children deserve to have an education, and any other barriers can make their lives very difficult to have access to related services need to address issues concerns. The drastic percentages of failure are an overwhelming number due to high suspensions putting them back into the community to suffer homelessness the criminal activity resulting in incarceration and death.

 Interventions or Solutions

  Strategy and necessary to address the issues of homeless students within our society first steps are important is brining awareness that there is a problem that can not be ignored. The focus on equity is to address systemic gaps in education among minority students is a major step in a positive direction for homeless students. School programs are now being set up at different times such as the after- school before school program and summer classes to address learning needs for student. Educator have taken the time to individualized students’ needs for social and emotion attention to behaviors that can occur from students being tossed around. Structured programing assists the students to learn coping skills to assist in obtaining knowledge to decision base on their needs. Knowledge can go along way when it comes to finding resources to aid in homeless situations students may have to be the advocate due to language barriers, drugs, incarceration, death. Structured social and emotional programing incorporates self-awareness, counseling, and empathy. Relationship building is very important it incorporates the community and all adults from the parent, family of the student’s teacher, principals, psychologist, stakeholders, and board members. Collaboration from parents and educators to aid in academic interventions assisting in closing the games and eliminating barriers to prohibit student success. Programs are needed to support data collection in order to continue to develop and improve student situation to continue learning success. Solutions can be reached by address disproportionality outreach for specific populations that directly associate with homelessness. Funding sources that can elevate housing issues using local housing development or a hotel stay collaboration for other services private and public that links up with welfare services for public housing, run away centers, childcare services including mental health programing.

  Analysis and Review

The research investigation is based on the McKinney-Vento Act using qualitative methods with a focus group from urban regions. The research is based on a framework of social justice participants who were parents of students from preschool- 12. The study participants were made aware of and volunteered; convinced methods were practical for homelessness. Some recruited students were between 17- 22 years for a total of 8 males’ students and ten females’ students. It was challenging to keep up with students due to changes in schools and the history of educational stability. The study of qualitative and quantitative samples of cases utilizing sampling and analysis of collections of the census from various states in the United States. The research study done on eight-year-old students with (ASD) Autism Spectrum Disorders with intellectual disabilities and IQ under seventy. The study used thirteen thousand and three hundred and ninety-six students with ASD from various states in the US. The study revealed a significant difference racially in ASD incidences of sorted data that showed a misunderstanding of disability. The study described a problem from the point of view of those who may experience homelessness. Unstructured and semi-structured responses were expected; the brief research sought to highlight the McKinney-Vento Act for graduate students. McKinney-Vento Act allowed principals to know practicing educators struggle with the scenario of allowing a student to attend school without proper documentation. For the most part, the principal responses may indicate that educational administration programs are not practical enough. A principal is determined to be a leader, so barriers to education are something that they try to remove. School administrators must address the issue of homeless students enrolled in schools under the McKinney-Vento Act as soon as possible. All students from K-12 sampling from twenty administration students and graduated students within the district. When enrolling students for immediate participation in school, they must attend and be active in activities involving socialization . The model study theoretical addresses the link between the homeless student's emotions and motivation to learning that can be self-regulating. The study addresses the feelings, academic achievement for self-regulated learning. The research shows how positive emotions affect learning, exams, and performances and how they think during exams. The hypothesis of these studies showcases results that emotions have a significant impact on self-regulated learning. The research shows the links between control value theory and achievement goals and emotional learning. This article is regarding the Hamline Journal of Public Law and Policy for the education of homeless children in the United States. The report elaborates on where the federal funding money comes from (EHCY) Education of Homeless Children and Youth Program associated with the McKinney-Vento Act. The ECHY and the M-V Act are indicated as having difficulty with implementing their program. The articles elaborate on the litigation process that it took using amendments in congress to state the duties to be performed by programs associated with homelessness. The report is broken up into sections that define the different aspect of the M-V Act regarding rights to free education for homeless students .
