Homebound Strategy: Leveraging Global Experience for Local Enterprise in Public Relations

Choosing to work abroad is a monumental decision faced by many, characterized not only by opportunities but also by significant sacrifices. In the Philippines, the job market is notoriously competitive, with thousands vying for a single vacancy and the recruitment process being as daunting as 'passing through the eye of the needle.'

This challenging environment pushed me to seek opportunities far from home, leading to a 20-year career in Saudi Arabia within the communications sector. Despite the professional rewards, this choice came with its fair share of personal challenges: homesickness, cultural shifts, and the constant need for adjustment.

My journey began in the early 2005, when I boarded a plane to Saudi Arabia, filled with a mix of anticipation and apprehension. The initial wave of homesickness hit hard, as I grappled with not just the physical distance from family and friends, but also the vast cultural differences. Every day presented new challenges, from understanding workplace etiquette to navigating the nuances of a new language and customs. Yet, each obstacle also brought a lesson in resilience and adaptability, shaping not only my career but also my personal identity.

Challenges of Working Abroad

Stress and workload were constant companions in my early days abroad. The demanding nature of my job in communications required not only long hours but also a high degree of precision and adaptability. As I tried to prove my worth in a competitive field, I often worked through weekends and holidays, missing out on precious moments back home that I could never regain. This period taught me the importance of work-life balance—an aspect I struggled to maintain amid the high expectations and cultural differences in the workplace.

Adjusting to a new culture was another significant hurdle. The norms and social cues that I had taken for granted in the Philippines were vastly different in Saudi Arabia. Simple interactions at the market, the way meetings were conducted, and the observance of religious practices in everyday life required a thoughtful approach and sensitivity. Over time, I learned to appreciate the beauty and depth of Saudi culture, which enriched my understanding of the world.

Working in Saudi Arabia

My career in Saudi Arabia evolved significantly over the years. Initially hired as a junior communications officer, my role expanded as I gained expertise and trust. I moved through various positions, each offering new challenges and opportunities to learn. My experiences ranged from managing crisis communications to leading major promotional campaigns, all of which sharpened my strategic thinking and leadership skills.

One of the highlights of my career was the project that introduced advanced digital communication technologies to our department. Leading this initiative not only set our company ahead in the industry but also positioned me as an expert in my field. This project was particularly rewarding, as it allowed me to merge my technical skills with creative problem-solving, showcasing the potential of effective communication strategies in transforming business operations.

However, working in such a dynamic field also meant facing ethical dilemmas and navigating complex hierarchical structures. The lessons learned in these scenarios were profound and contributed greatly to my professional growth, teaching me the delicate balance of integrity and pragmatism required in corporate leadership.

Decision to Return

As rewarding as my career abroad has been, the pull of home has grown stronger with each passing year. My decision to return to the Philippines is driven by multiple factors, not least the desire to be closer to family and friends as I approach retirement. Moreover, the experience and savings I have accumulated abroad provide a solid foundation to pursue another dream: starting my own business.

The business I envision would leverage my communications background, possibly in a consultancy role, helping local firms elevate their international presence. This not only fulfills a personal goal but also contributes to the local economy, creating jobs and offering the insights I've gained from two decades of working in a global hub.

In preparing for this transition, I am acutely aware of the challenges ahead. Establishing a new business in a competitive market requires not just capital but also a deep understanding of local needs and business practices. However, I am equipped with years of experience and a network of contacts that I believe will be instrumental in my success.

Envisioning the Future

The company I envision will specialize in strategic communication, crisis management, and digital PR, serving both local businesses aspiring to expand and multinational corporations seeking to establish a foothold in the Philippine market. My time at Aramco, where I handled extensive communications campaigns and navigated complex public relations challenges, has equipped me with unique insights and a skill set that are invaluable in this endeavor.

Understanding the local market is crucial, and I plan to leverage my knowledge of both Saudi and Filipino business environments to bridge gaps for my clients. The first step involves conducting a comprehensive market analysis to identify the needs of potential clients and the current gaps in local PR services. This will inform the strategic planning of services my company will offer, ensuring they are tailored to meet the high demands of a dynamic market.

Leveraging Technology

Digital transformation in PR is something I am particularly passionate about, given my successful implementation of digital communication technologies at Aramco. My company will utilize the latest in social media analytics, and digital content creation to craft compelling narratives and manage public perception effectively. These tools will not only increase the reach and impact of campaigns but also provide measurable metrics to evaluate their success.

Building a Team

Building the right team is critical. I intend to recruit locally, tapping into the Filipino talent pool of creative, tech-savvy communicators who can bring fresh perspectives and innovative ideas to the table. Additionally, fostering a culture of continuous learning and professional development will be key to keeping the team updated on the latest industry trends and technologies.

Networking and Partnerships

Networking will play a crucial role in the success of the venture. Utilizing my existing contacts from Aramco and other international connections, I plan to build partnerships that can offer mutual benefits, such as shared resources and co-marketing opportunities. Participating in industry events and joining relevant associations will also help establish the firm's presence in the market.

Long-Term Goals

Looking to the future, my aim is not only to establish a successful PR firm but also to set new standards in the industry in the Philippines, promoting transparency, innovation, and ethical practices. I envision my company becoming a leader in transforming how Filipino businesses communicate, bridging the gap between local enterprises and the global market.

Moving Forward

Reflecting on my 20 years in Saudi Arabia, the journey has been one of immense growth, filled with both challenges and achievements. While the decision to work abroad was not made lightly, it has shaped me into the person I am today, ready to embark on a new chapter back in the Philippines. As I look forward to establishing my business and enjoying my retirement surrounded by loved ones, I am grateful for every moment that has led me to this point, knowing that each experience has built a foundation for the future.

After two decades of deep immersion in the field of communications and public relations at one of the world's largest companies, Aramco, I am ready to channel my expertise into a new challenge: launching my own PR firm in the Philippines. This decision stems not only from a desire to return to my roots but also from a vision to contribute to the burgeoning local business landscape by introducing world-class PR strategies.

Hopefully, realizing this dream will be soonest.
