After a very long, dark and cold winter our homes can take a serious beating during the winter months!

As we welcome the bright Spring sunshine this can also expose the missing roof shingles, cracked walkways, leaf filled gutters and dead plants from last years flower beds!

To get ready for the gorgeous months ahead, follow the checklist below to get your chores done quickly and spend more time having fun in the sun!

1. Examine Your Roof Shingles
After all the heavy snowfall and cycles of freezing and thawing, it’s important to have a look at the shingles on your roof! Be sure to look out for any shingles that are missing, buckled or loose that might need replaced. Also, flashing around plumbing vents, skylights and chimneys should be checked and repaired by a qualified roofer!

2. Check the Gutters
Check your gutters for any cracks, leaks or loose spots! It is important to clear out any built up debris left over from the fall months to ensure your gutters are clearing water away from your home efficiently! Be sure your downspouts are pointed away from the foundation and are also clear of debris!

3. Use Compacted Soil
Any low areas in the yard or near the foundation should be filled in with soil! Heavy rains in the spring can pool in these low areas possibly causing flooding near the foundation! Not to mention in the summer any excess pooling of water can create a breeding ground for insects! Yuck!

4. Check the Attic
This one is often overlooked but is very important to ensure no nests have been built during the winter months, and to ensure proper ventilation! Look for obstructions over vents, damaged soffit panels, roof flashing leaks and wet spots on insulation!

5. Recaulk Windows and Doors
Make sure you inspect around your windows and doors in case the caulking needs to be redone after the harsh winter months! Taking this extra step can keep out heat and humidity in the summer and cool drafts in the winter, which could save on utility bills year round!

Although this is not a comprehensive maintenance list it’s a good starting point to get ahead on your Spring chores!
