(NOT) Home for the Holidays!

(NOT) Home for the Holidays!

Happy Holidays - Dr. Gold here! For several years now, I have exercised the privilege of providing my sons with experiences over things during the holidays. To the disdain of their grandparents, I keep gifts to a minimum and memories to a maximum. We are headed out of town for a portion of the holidays, but I am also immensely aware of how so many of us flex our opportunity to travel without thoughtfulness.?

Dr. Lisa Ingarfield of Defi Consulting shared an?amazing podcast?with me that heightened my awareness of travel, how we approach it, and querying whether there is such a thing as ethical travel. As you travel over the holidays or plan your travel schedule for 2024, I ask you to think critically about how to do it with cognizance and care. Take a look at the resources I've dug up on how to travel more thoughtfully than we ever have before.

'Tis the season of love, laughter, and cherished traditions! May your days be merry and bright, your homes filled with warmth, and your hearts brimming with the magic of the incoming holiday season. Cheers to a season of love, laughter, and cherished connections.

Five Thoughts from SPG

1. Environmentally responsible travel is just one aspect of ethical travel.

2. We cannot divorce ourselves of capitalism in tourism, but we can be cognizant of leaving only what's beneficial.

3. Passport privilege is real, especially for U.S. Citizens, however this changed in and beyond the COVID-19 pandemic.

4. Some people choose not to have passports for very legitimate reasons. Some people choose to secure passports for very legitimate reasons.

5. If you have ever considered securing a passport for the purposes of potentially fleeing to another country to pursue other citizenship, you have been marginalized in some way.

Four Questions from SPG

1. Is ethical travel even possible?

2. How can we implement ethical travel when we may not be functioning ethically at home?

3. How might travel be treated differently by immigrants and / or people who are the descendants of those who were kidnapped?

4. How can we hold both the privilege of travel and respect for land, air, water, and people?
