The Benefits, Results, and Facts

Is it possible to do derma rolling at home? Fields and Rodan Clearer, brighter and firmer skin in minutes—all from the comfort of our own home?

Are you thinking this sounds too good? However, according to the many advocates of derma rolling (and there are many), it is one of the simplest ways to enhance the texture and tone of your skin without undergoing a series of costly in-office procedures such as chemical peels or laser treatments.

Everything you have always wanted to hear about Derma Rolling at Home.

However, before beginning, there are a few things you should be aware of. After all, whether easy or difficult, derma rolling at home still requires rolling needles across your face and can be accomplished by avoiding injury or infection risk.

What is a Derma Roller?

Before we accurately get into derma rolling (also known as collagen induction therapy, or CIT), it's important to understand what a derma roller is. A derma roller is a small roller with microneedles that can be used on the skin.

The needles' lengths range from 0.25 mm to 1.5m. You roll the device over your skin to produce tiny punctures that stimulate skin repair and the formation of new collagen. Collagen, a bodily protein composed of amino acids, is a component of connective tissue that aids in skin firmness, resilience, suppleness, and elasticity.

The journal Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery published an article on derma rolling in 2008, stating that CIT "has proven to be an easy and fast process for safely treating wrinkles and scars." In contrast to ablative laser therapies, the epidermis is not compromised and remains intact. As a result, the procedure can be repeated safely and is also appropriate for areas where laser treatments and deep peels are not possible."

As a result, the short-term wounding of the skin is intended to stimulate the development of a protein, which would, in turn, improve the skin to a healthier degree than before. Consider derma rolling to be similar to weight lifting and working out in that you cause tiny tears in your muscles, allowing the muscle to regenerate and become stronger than before. It's not a perfect analogy or contrast, but you get the idea.

The advantages of derma rolling aren't limited to skin needling and subsequent skin repair. Derma rolling will expose deeper layers of your skin to the benefits of different topical ointments, natural oils, medications, and products, resulting in increased efficacy and therapeutic impact.

In other words, because of the increased exposure to the skin's most important layers after derma rolling, your skin would be more vulnerable to the effects of anything that comes into contact with it. As a result, any skin cream or supplement (such as avocado oil, coconut oil, sunflower oil, or jojoba oil) may be more beneficial if used after derma rolling.

However, this is a two-way street; after derma rolling, skin is usually at least slightly irritated and just as susceptible to skin-harming elements and items. As a result, it is important to never (ever!) try a new skin product after derma rolling. The truth is that we never know how our skin will respond to a new product or ingredient, and if the reaction is negative, it will be compounded by the skin being freshly needled and exposed.

It's also worth noting that, in the same way, you shouldn't be alarmed by initial skin discomfort and redness after derma rolling! Unfortunately, in many cases, this type of skin reaction is expected – the skin, having been freshly 'wounded,' has to worsen before it gets better. The shorter the needle, the less likely the discomfort, and the results will usually differ depending on the individual. Your skin's responses to derma rolling are also likely to lessen with time, so keep at it, and your redness and discomfort can fade faster.

What Is Derma Rolling?

"Derma rolling is a real thing," explains certified esthetician Amber Smith of Amber Smith Skin & Body Spa in Brookline, Massachusetts. "It's the act of gently rolling and pushing back the top layer of skin by simply applying pressure to it."

Rodan and Fields Derma Roller: Let's start with the fundamentals. Microneedling, also known as "dermarolling," is the short-teeny tiny (we're talking microscopic) holes in the surface layers of your skin with a system aptly called a "microneedler" or "dermaroller."

Once you learn how to do it correctly, derma rolling can yield improved texture, texture, and skin tone in just a few sessions. What Is Derma Rolling Used For? In clinical settings, derma rolling is often used to treat discolouration, hyperpigmentation, wrinkles, pigmentation and fine lines. At home, it's often used to relieve conditions like eczema and psoriasis. How Does It Work? "Derma rolling is basically just a combination of physical and chemical exfoliation," explains Smith.

Rodan and Fields Derma Roller: The gadget looks like a mini paint roller, which is adorable until you know it's covered in tiny needles that puncture your skin—albeit superficially.

These micro-injuries are expected to signal the body to go into repair mode, triggering new collagen and elastin development. (Both are necessary for preserving your skin's firmness and elasticity, and both are dramatically reduced as we age.) The tiny punctures also build pathways for your skincare products to absorb more effectively.

Is it possible to do derma rolling at home?

The majority of dermatologists we've talked with believe that at-home microneedling is similar to a mild exfoliation. The advantages to doing it; it the effects are subtle and allowing for your skincare to penetrate the skin and exfoliating dead skin cells.

In-office procedures use medical-grade instruments with needles ranging from 0.3 mm to 1 mm and longer to penetrate deeper into your tissue. In contrast, most at-home rollers have significantly shorter needles—typically 0.2 mm or less (which is intended to minimise the risk of injury).

In short, most at-home devices' needles aren't long or sharp enough to stimulate new collagen formation. They will, however, increase the efficacy of your skincare products by opening those aforementioned little channels in your epidermis, allowing for better overall absorption.

OK, now that we've set our goals, let's get this party started.

Selecting the Appropriate A Home Derma Roller Needle Size

Derma roller needles are available in a range of sizes ranging from 0.2mm to 3.0mm, each tailored to a specific collection of skin complications. Needles 1mm and shorter are appropriate for basic procedures, whereas longer ones are recommended for more severe skin ailments.

Derma roller needle lengths - The Rodan and Fields AMP MD machine roller contains 198 surgical steel micro-needles of consistent duration (0.2mm)

Skin roller needle with a diameter of 0.2 – 0.3mm

The 0.2 to 0.3mm skin roller needles are the smallest of the derma roller microneedles and are used mostly for transdermal absorption or improved absorption of skincare items.

Regardless of size, daily use of a derma roller is likely to cause skin redness and irritation. The 0.2/0.3mm needle, on the other hand, can be used any other day with no adverse effects.

There should be no bleeding as you are not forcing these needles deep into the skin but rolling, except for common small blood spots. It is the most appropriate needle size for the areas around the eyes and ears, so avoid using longer needles in these areas.

How Often To Use A Derma Roller At Home?

There are several guidelines for dermarolling speeds, but to achieve the best results with the least amount of discomfort, we spent a considerable amount of time testing the dermaroller to find a response once and for all.

If you can use your dermaroller safely 2-3 times a week (warning: this only applies if the needles are 0.2mm or smaller), I have discovered that twice a week with the high quality  REDEFINE Intensive Renewing Serum. One time a week helps the skin gradually become accustomed to the micro-needles while enhancing serum absorption with rapid and profound absorption. It is important to stick to your weekly dermarolling session and not skip it, as this will help you maintain your performance.

It is not advised to use a dermarolling system sized 0.5 mm and above more than once per month, but we can't stress enough that if you're looking for longer needles, it should be a procedure by a specialist.

The Derms usually state that the amount of micro-rolling depends on the individual's skin. Those with thicker, more sebaceous skin should use a dermaroller once a week. Those with more sensitive skin, on the other hand, can only be able to use a dermaroller once a month.

Derma Rolling For Skin Tone and Texture

"Many of the benefits of derma rolling you would find in a plastic surgeon's office," says A.J. Pacini, cosmetic dermatologist at Pacini Dermatology and Laser in Santa Monica, California. While derma rolling in its home form is highly concentrated and gentle—so what can go wrong?

"The tissue damage is typically short-lived," says Dr Pacini. "The biggest concern with derma rolling is that there is a lack of knowledge as to what is actually happening," Pacini says that one of the biggest misconceptions is that the rolling process damages collagen.

"Collagen is very important in maintaining skin elasticity and depth. You are actually causing damage to the skin when you perform derma rolling.

Derma Rolling For Anti-Aging

After decades of patients pleading with dermatologists to "please make my skin younger again," many dermatologists now agree that a derma roller is a viable option for improving the texture and tone of the skin.

What is it: A derma roller is a handy device that's used to help remove dead cells and tighten the skin on the face and body. Unlike several cosmetic peels or chemical peels, it's a non-invasive procedure that does not require a doctor's supervision. Why it works: The technique can help correct hyper-exposed skin that's often filled with dead skin cells and has even been said to work wonders for patients with acne. Derma rolling is not like a massage or even other face-polishing techniques—it's actually quite non-invasive.

Derma Rolling For Men

Derma rolling is not only useful for the fairest of complexions, but it's also appropriate for men of any skin type, says board-certified dermatologist Joshua Zeichner, M.D., director of cosmetic + clinical research of dermatology at Mount Sinai Hospital. "Women have likely been derma rolling since they were young girls using bath towels," he says, "and men can use a less restrictive sheet if that's easier for them to do at home." Derma rolling is known to have some pretty amazing benefits for women.

Derma Rolling For Large Pores

What is derma rolling, and why should I try it? This form of skin therapy, sometimes referred to as "acne therapy," is a procedure that involves applying gentle strokes to problem areas of the face, such as the nose, chin and upper lip, said Liza Bolen, MD, a New York City dermatologist. "The benefits are twofold," she said. "It produces micro-tears in the skin, which help to clear out micro-abrasions. And when the skin is opened, and its skin cells are released, it improves circulation to the facial skin and makes it a little more receptive to new skin cell growth," she said. How does it work?

Derma Rolling For Stretch Marks

To get the scoop on how it really works, we talked to two seasoned derma rolling pros, Rodan & Fields' Kathy Kaehler and founder of St. Tropez Skincare, Julia Clarke. Read on for their thoughts on this cutting-edge beauty trend, along with a demonstration video from the pros! "Derma rolling is very popular among celebrities and models because it does wonders for all skin types," says Kaehler. "It has been a client favourite of mine for years. It not only improves the texture of the skin, but it also helps relieve tension and even help treat stretch marks." "This has been the #1 recommended treatment by dermatologists to improve the texture of the skin," adds Clarke. "It can also be used for acne scarring and stretch marks.

Derma Rolling For Scars

Using your fingertips, you can massage the skin's surface to target hyperpigmentation (skin discolouration), fine lines and wrinkles, and help reduce the appearance of scars. The reason? Derma rolling's massaging action gently forces blood to flow into the skin and soften the scar tissue so it's more supple and collagen is produced, making the scar less noticeable. Derma rolling works on all skin types, including those with sensitive or dry skin. The key, explains Board-Certified Plastic Surgeon Douglas L. Conroy, MD, FAAD, FAACS, author of Doctors Preferred Cosmetic Surgery, is to do it gently and to massage one area at a time for just a minute or two. One caveat: This method will not help fade hyperpigmentation. For that, a derma roller must be activated with a light touch.

Derma Rolling For Hyperpigmentation

Hyperpigmentation is where areas of the skin become darker in colour than the surrounding skin. It is easily visible and may make those who suffer from it feel self-conscious and uncomfortable. Fortunately, for those of us who are unfortunate enough to have hyperpigmentation, there is derma rolling. Derma rolling can reduce the effects of and even remove hyperpigmentation by assisting in removing the topmost layer of skin and developing melanocytes.

Here's a step-by-step tutorial for doing derma rolling at home: - or see the video above.

1. Always begin with a blank slate. Until derma rolling, make sure you remove all makeup, dirt, and surface oils from your skin. When you build these micro-channels in your skin, you don't want something that could clog or infect your pores to sit on top. Also, keep your computer clean. Before each use, sterilise the needles with our kit's tablets (80% or higher) and allow the tool to air-dry (usually ten to fifteen minutes).

 2. Before you begin, apply a thin layer of toner. This ensures full absorption of your skincare items and creates a smoother surface for the roller to travel over your skin.

3. Gently roll. Roll the system in vertical, horizontal, and diagonal strokes over your cheeks, sides of your face, forehead, chin, upper lip, and neck, using smooth, even pressure. Roll over each segment no more than two or three times per session.

4. Apply serum to seal it in. We recommend combining home derma rolling with an active ingredient such as vitamin C (for brightening) or peptides (for firming).

5. Repeat as necessary. You can use a derma roller every couple of days or every other day, depending on how well your skin tolerates the procedure. To be extra careful, we recommend consulting your tool's manual for suggested usage—especially if this is your first time using it.

Are there any precautions to take while Derma Rolling at home?

The most important consideration for at-home derma rolling is hygiene. That being said, you must ensure that your tool is properly disinfected before and after each use. Again, soak the roller in the jar with the tablets before allowing it to air-dry (usually ten to fifteen minutes).

Twice a week is a typical use.

On that note, it is also important that you clean your hands and face before each treatment. Not to flog a dead horse, but when using needles of any duration on your skin, hygiene is of the utmost importance.

Our roller should also be replaced once a year. The needles on-at-home devices appear to dull easily, rendering them ineffective over time.

Finally, avoid rolling over active breakouts or sores. This can spread bacteria from one part of your face to another, delaying healing even further. Wait until the area has absolutely cleared before rolling again.

Key Takeaways

I had to do a little research to make sure we were up to date on the latest skin care technique, and indeed, we are. Derma rolling is still a great at-home treatment you can add to your selfcare routine.

However, if you're willing to invest in the best tool money can buy (the well-reviewed, sommelier-recommended and ultra-portable Suvara Mini Massager), you will find that it's worth every minute and every penny.

The AMP MD Derma-Roller has been clinically tested for use with the REDEFINE, REVERSE, REDEFINE Intensive Renewing Serum, and R+F Active Hydration Serum regimens. The REDEFINE AMP MD System should not be used in conjunction with any other items or drugs, including the UNBLEMISH or SOOTHE Regimens.

  • May I use the REDEFINE AMP MD System if I have active acne or sensitive skin?

The REDEFINE AMP MD System is not recommended for use on sensitive skin or acne-prone skin.

  • Is it possible to use the REDEFINE AMP MD System in the morning?

We suggest using the REDEFINE AMP MD System in the evening for better results because sleeping improves the receptivity of its beneficial ingredients. Often use sunscreen in the morning because the Retinal in our REDEFINE Intensive Renewing Serum can increase photosensitivity. Sun exposure also reduces the effectiveness of Retinal.

  • Can you lend the AMP MD Derma-Roller to another person?

The AMP MD Derma-Roller should only be used on one user.
