Home care or not? Our assessment tool and guide helps you decide with confidence.

A few weeks ago, I found myself at a luncheon seated next to a cardiologist. When I mentioned that I owned a home care agency, his blank expression said it all - he knew very little about what we do. As our conversation unfolded and I explained our services, he totally recognized how valuable home care could be for his patients.

That interaction was a lightbulb moment for me. After 19 years in business, I sometimes forget that many people, even healthcare professionals, aren't familiar with home care or when it might be beneficial for their patients, clients and loved ones. This realization inspired me to create something practical and user-friendly: the Home Care Assessment tool and its Companion Guide.

Think of the Home Care Assessment as your friendly guide to understanding how well someone's managing at home - kind of like a wellness check-up for daily living. It's broken into four main parts that matter most:

  • Personal care (like grooming and bathing)
  • Home safety
  • Managing medical needs and
  • Day-to-day activities.

Each section uses a simple scoring system - from 0 to 3 - to help you spot where things are going great and where some help might be needed. The best part? You don't need to be a healthcare expert to use it. Whether you're checking in on a loved one or planning for future care needs, this tool helps paint a clear picture.

The Companion Guide is like having an experienced friend walk you through the process, pointing out what to look for and when to be concerned. At the end, you'll get a total score that helps you understand if someone's doing just fine on their own or might need a helping hand - ranging from occasional check-ins to more regular support.

Often, families wait until a crisis happens before considering home care. This assessment tool helps you be proactive rather than reactive. It can spark important conversations and help you plan ahead, ensuring your loved ones get the right level of support exactly when they need it.
