The Holy Spirit Works with God’s Word
David W Palmer
First, we remember that the Holy Spirit wrote the entire Bible:
(2 Timothy 3:16 APE) Every writing (scripture) which is written by the Spirit is profitable for teaching, for correction, for direction and for a course in righteousness.
(2 Peter 1:21 TLB) For no prophecy recorded in Scripture was ever thought up by the prophet himself. It was the Holy Spirit within these godly men who gave them true messages from God.
The Holy Spirit inspired God’s written word; he realizes that just as he is the key to our whole inheritance package, what he has already said in the holy Scriptures is too. So how do we work with the Holy Spirit and what he has written in God’s word to release the full manifestation of all of our partnership benefits? The following is what the Holy Spirit told Joshua to do when he was charged with the responsibility of leading his generation into their inheritance:
(Joshua 1:8 NKJV) “This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate in it day and night, that you may observe to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success.”
Did you notice the word “observe” in this verse? In English, it means to watch or see. In our high school science classes, it meant to watch and take specific note of what we were seeing in our experiments. The Holy Spirit knows what’s waiting to be revealed to us through the process of meditating in God’s word and observing what we see:
(1 Corinthians 2:9–10 NKJV) But as it is written: “Eye has not seen, nor ear heard, Nor have entered into the heart of man The things which God has prepared for those who love Him.” {10} But God has revealed them to us through His Spirit. For the Spirit searches all things, yes, the deep things of God.

God’s precious Holy Spirit reveals to us the “things which God has prepared” for us. Like a fully prepared banquet, they are waiting for us in God’s heavenly realm. Again, Scripture emphasizes that these “things” cannot be received, perceived, or understood through the “eye,” or “ear”—the normal entry points for information. The way they come into our consciousness is through Holy Spirit revelation—especially as we obey his instruction to meditate in God’s word day and night. If we see with him the “things which God has prepared” for us, we can have and experience them here and now. We receive them—they transfer to us—via the faith Jesus outlined in Mark 11:22–26:
(Mark 11:23 AMP) “I assure you and most solemnly say to you, whoever says to this mountain, ‘Be lifted up and thrown into the sea!’ and does not doubt in his heart [in God’s unlimited power], but believes that what he says is going to take place, it will be done for him [in accordance with God’s will].”
The key to receiving the living words that explode from our mouths in mountain-moving faith is to have them come alive through meditation in God’s word. The Holy Spirit says to meditate in it until you “observe” something—until you see yourself with it, as it, and/or doing it. When you see it while in close communion with him, you are assured that it is his will; and you will know that it is what he intends to do, or for you to have. Then as you declare what you’ve seen and heard, you will believe—without any doubt—that what you say will be done; and then you will have what you say. This is exactly how Jesus walked in God’s provision and purpose for him:
(John 5:19–20 NKJV) Then Jesus answered and said to them, “Most assuredly, I say to you, the Son can do nothing of Himself, but what He sees the Father do; for whatever He does, the Son also does in like manner. {20} For the Father loves the Son, and shows Him all things that He Himself does; and He will show Him greater works than these, that you may marvel.”
Today, I believe that we have clearly seen from God’s holy word that the key to receiving our inheritance package from him is found in his word and Spirit. He has given them both to us: the word through the revelation of many writers, the life-risking work of many faithful scholars, and the faithfulness of previous generations; and we receive the Holy Spirit as a gracious gift from our loving Father’s heart—through the death, burial, resurrection, and ascension of our Lord Jesus Christ.
Let’s simply obey the amazing Spirit of God when he says to meditate in his Word “day and night.” And let’s give our full attention to watching in the spirit for what he is showing us as we do this. I encourage you not to neglect the two key gifts God has given us in tandem with our new birth: his written word, and his wonderful Spirit of holiness. Together, they unlock the title deed to our inheritance and enable fully experienced possession of it to come to us.
(Acts 20:32 NKJV) “So now, brethren, I commend you to God and to the word of His grace, which is able to build you up and give you an inheritance among all those who are sanctified.”
