The Hollywood writers’ strike could affect other industries

Last week, the stars of Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer left their own U.K. premiere. The reason? A strike-authorization vote by the SAG-AFTRA actors union, which, alongside the Writers Guild of America strike that has been in place since May, effectively shuts down Hollywood. It’s a crisis that will have consequences beyond the silver screen, Shirley Li wrote this past spring: Any industry that’s dealing with major technological shifts, such as the rise of artificial intelligence, or figuring out what a “new normal” looks like as the pandemic wanes should be paying attention to these conversations. What happens in Hollywood will inform labor disputes in other industries as yet another strike-filled summer begins.

Today’s newsletter brings you stories about the potential ripple effect of the Hollywood writers’ strike.?

Sidney Maradan History: This is the 1st time since 1960, when Ronald Reagan was SAG President, WGA & SAG struck for 100 days! 1980 the Actors struck for 3 Months & I walked the line with Julie Newmar. (RIP). 2x in the past the WGA struck for 100 days! June, on behalf of the Seattle Local I walked the picket lines, the only Actor, in front of Paramount Studio's now heading into its 6th Month. Now, SAG/AFTRA & WGA are joined together in Solidarity! AI is a definite threat to creativity by Artists, as technology will never replace the pen & the process to get a Draft to a Synopsis, Storyline, Script, Treatment, edits to the Big Screen. How is AI going to be able to have Investors in Film for their ROI. Note: AI cannot create Music for a Soundtrack, either! Your resume' does not reflect your knowledge of this Industry! Let's image you are an Artist where your Master created 1000 prints and you did not receive a dime for your work! AMPTP Billionaires to not realize that without Actors, Musicians, Producers, Directors & Production Crews their is no product to sell! FAIR PAY, Pension, Health/ Welfare Benefits, Royalties for Music & Residuals for Film & TV is the right thing to do! CHESTER SWANSON SR.Cindy Walas@Kyle Fong

In the future, the strikes of guild writers, actors, actresses, or of whatever role the strikers play in Hollywood would become less and less relevant to affect film production, contents, screen play, short films and etc., as generative AI can perform all the Hollywood workforce that they can perform plus big film producers companies are not even worried about the short of talents as AI can perform pretty much of what human can do plus film companies are not tied up to employees contract and it easy for them to maintain small workforce and keep the top talents at bay. This phenomena is scarier than of what we think as human talents are dispensable and disposable by AI creators. Humans will work with AI to survive with universal income distributed equally for those talents affected with less hours per week to barely to survive.
