The Holidays 2021: Ads Round-Up

I am loving the Holiday ads already! Here is a round-up of my top 5 so far:

Aldi

A follow on from last year and take on Charles Dickens’ Chrismas Carol, Ebenezer Scrooge turns into Ebanana Scrooge as the tale of a Christmas Carrot continues. Marcus Radishford even makes an appearance in the campaign, too! Despite the excellent use of puns, my favourite part about this ad is the parting words: ‘For you to be happy, you need to be kind’ and a promise from Aldi to donate 1.8 million meals to families in need this Christmas.?

CocaCola

I am glad CocaCola has finally decided to update their holiday campaign! The new focus on togetherness is a welcome change but the more typical Christmas heartwarming still works here as the suspense builds and CocaCola have done it very well. Loving the new logo treatment too!?

Sports Direct

It feels like sport has played a huge role in our lives over the past year and Sports Direct have done a great job of including some of the key players - Emma Radacanu, Jack Grealish, Jessica Ennis...Considering it’s only the 2nd year that Sports Direct have created a Christmas ad, the lighthearted, playfulness is a refreshing change of pace from usual ads and one that really hits the mark!?

Chase Bank

Catherine O’Hara, who plays Kevin McCallister's mom in the iconic Christmas movie, Home Alone, realises she's lost Kevin again. Only this time, it’s Kevin Hart! The reimagining of an iconic Christmas movie with a fun twist is a great way to keep it upbeat and fun - which seems to be much more in fitting with the Christmas mood of 2021 - no tissues please!?

Ikea

After last year’s grime masterpiece, Ikea had a lot to live up to. Without overbearing sentimentality or cliche, Ikea does a fantastic job of understanding how important uninterrupted time at home with family is. I’m a huge fan of the bouncer bears and they would make a great new product line too!?

BONUS:?

Zalando

Following from the epic "We Will Hug Again" holiday campaign from last year, this year Zalando brings us #JoyIsOurs which champions small moments of joy and reclaims those feelings of euphoria amidst the excitement of the holiday season. The music, by M83, drives high emotion and delivers the goosebumps we want the audience to feel when watching this spot!

Although big Christmas ad players, including John Lewis and Amazon, have been keeping with the typical blueprint, overall there seems to be a new kind of mood this Christmas. One that’s much more playful, optimistic and lighthearted and I think it’s exactly what everyone was looking for!?

Aldi definitely wins IMO hands down. Super clever story-telling with a great bit of continuity and making a difference to those that really need it: Say-Do. Brilliantly done.
