Holiday Security Tips

Holiday Security Tips

The holidays are upon us and now is a good time to review the unique security risks & crimes that increase this time of year!

Home Security:

Burglary increases this time of year because criminals know there is a good chance that there are extra goodies in your house that are very portable.

-Utilize your home security system when you leave your home for an extended period of time.

-Use timers or smart lights to make your home appear occupied, when you’re away.

-Track your package deliveries and have a trusted neighbor grab packages from your front steps is you aren’t able to get them in a timely manner.

Be Aware of Porch Pirates!

-Avoid posting holiday travel plans or vacation photos until after your trip to avoid alerting thieves that you are away.

-Use a safe to keep items like jewelry and important documents in a hidden, secure location.

-Install a video door camera if you don’t have one to monitor activity such as vehicle traffic, package deliveries & solicitation at your front door.

Shopping Security:

Robbery, pickpocketing and scams increase during the holiday season as it is a target rich environment.

-Always shop with a friend, the buddy system is critical to reduce the likelihood of becoming a target.

-Stay alert in crowds, keep your wallet in your front pocket to prevent pickpockets or your purse close to your body, zipped up using the crossbody carrying style.

-Avoid distractions, like texting or watching videos while walking, which can make you an easy target.

-Park smart in well-lit areas, lock your car and avoid leaving visible valuables inside, always look in your backseat before re-entering your car.

Don’t be distracted when returning to your car after shopping!

-Avoid carrying large shopping bags to your car more than once and be aware of anyone following you to your car.

Beware of Scams:

-Watch for phishing emails, avoid clicking links in unsolicited emails or texts

-Avoid ads, websites offering deals that seem too good to be true.

-Monitor your bank accounts, regularly check your statements for unauthorized transactions.

-Save digital and paper receipts for returns or to resolve billing disputes.

Finally, since you have read this article your situational awareness has naturally increased because you are more aware of the increased risks; continue to maintain this heightened awareness throughout the holiday season and beyond to prevent becoming a victim of an opportunistic crime!

Have a Happy & Blessed Thanksgiving!
