Holiday Readiness Strategies for Peak Performance

Holiday Readiness Strategies for Peak Performance

As the holiday season approaches, ensuring a smooth customer experience is paramount for retail, digital, and eCommerce businesses. Holiday Readiness planning is crucial for maximizing sales and guaranteeing a quality customer experience during this peak period. Agile and project management professionals can play a key role by adopting a structured approach and focusing on areas like PI planning, code freezes, website traffic, and capacity. There are so many things for Project Management, Agile, Marketing and Technology professionals to prepare for.

What is Holiday Readiness?

Holiday readiness encompasses a comprehensive set of preparations to ensure an organization's systems, processes, and teams are optimally equipped to handle the surge in demand during the holiday season. It involves a meticulous planning and execution process that addresses various aspects, including website performance, inventory management, supply chain logistics, and customer service.

Holiday Readiness in 2024: Capturing the more discerning shoppers

Shoppers in 2024 will be more discerning than ever, prioritizing quality, value, and customer service over mere price cuts. Thanks to social media, shoppers are banding together to share in real time what great deals are and what is a fake deal. They are using analytics to track price changes over time and are calling out companies for fake sales. Shoppers are already strained thanks to the economy and endless streams of layoffs and it will be harder to pry their dollars out of their hands in 2024 as the cost of living has risen and wages have stagnated or have gone back to where they were 10 yrs ago. This shift in consumer behavior is impacting brand loyalty, as shoppers are more open to trying new brands and retailers. Analytics and planning will really help companies succeed.

Key takeaways for holiday readiness include:

  • Prioritize value and customer service. According to a recent survey, 72% of consumers are more thoughtful about their spending, and 62% are more mindful about where they shop. Additionally, 73% of consumers are willing to stick with companies that increase their prices, given they feel valued as customers.
  • Embrace brand diversity. Approximately a third of consumers are spending more time deciding, considering more brands (30%), and contemplating more retailers (29%). Moreover, 47% of consumers have tried at least one new brand, and 62% of Gen Z and Millennials are likely to change their shopping places, compared to 51% of Gen X and Boomers. ?
  • Leverage Google & Social Media power. Over 40% of shoppers use Google for researching a purchase, whether online or in-store. Almost a third of holiday shoppers use Google Maps to aid their shopping. Additionally, a survey found that 76% of respondents agree that YouTube enhances the traditional shopping journey. ?Consumers are looking for reviews and doing a lot of research. If you do Youtube videos about your products or any social branding. TAG THOSE VIDEOS with LINKS TO THE PRODUCTS for better conversion. TikTok helps to add to the purchase opportunity so diversify your platforms.
  • Optimize for mobile. Ensure your website and marketing efforts are mobile-friendly, as a significant portion of holiday shopping occurs on smartphones and tablets.

Impact on IT and Marketing Departments

IT and Marketing departments play pivotal roles in holiday readiness. IT teams are responsible for ensuring the scalability and reliability of the organization's technology infrastructure, including websites, applications, and databases. This involves capacity planning, performance testing, and implementing disaster recovery measures. Marketing teams, on the other hand, focus on creating effective marketing campaigns to drive customer engagement and maximize sales. They need to coordinate closely with IT to ensure that the website, analytics, and digital assets are ready to support the increased traffic and promotions.

Agile and Project Management Professionals: Key Considerations

Agile and project management professionals can contribute significantly to holiday readiness by adopting a structured and iterative approach. Here are some key considerations:

  • PI Planning and Code Freezes: Agile teams can leverage PI planning to establish a clear roadmap and prioritize initiatives that support holiday readiness. Implementing code freezes during critical periods, such as December, can help prevent disruptions and ensure the stability of the production environment.
  • Website Traffic and Capacity: Agile teams should collaborate with IT to estimate and plan for peak website traffic during the holiday season. This involves capacity planning, performance testing, and implementing load-balancing mechanisms to ensure a smooth user experience.
  • Continuous Monitoring and Optimization: Agile teams can use constant monitoring tools to track website performance and identify potential bottlenecks. This enables them to make timely adjustments and optimize the user experience.

Holiday Readiness Checklist

The holiday shopping season is a critical time for retailers. To succeed, they must be well-prepared to meet customer demands. A comprehensive holiday readiness checklist is essential to ensure a smooth and successful season. Let's Talk Statistics

Online retail traffic experienced a modest 5% year-over-year increase during Cyber Week 2023. However, the overall holiday season saw a slight decline in retail web traffic compared to the previous year, with a 0.4% decrease from 1.654 billion to 1.648 billion sessions.

Notably, early access sales events surpassed Cyber Five as the peak traffic days. Traffic surged in the days leading up to Cyber Five, with a 41% year-over-year increase, but then declined during the Cyber Five period itself, with a 11% drop.

The most significant increases in traffic occurred on the Friday and Monday before Black Friday, with year-over-year growth rates of 63% and 58%, respectively.

Mobile phone sales continue to grow as well as sales on social media platforms.

According to Adobe and other analytics firms, these were the days that saw the most volume. You can clearly see the impact the economy and job losses had.

New The Very Agile PM
Thanks to one of my subscribers, The ink is dry and MY GREEN BANNER IS DOWN! The Green Banner does work, so don't believe all of those naysayers out there just looking for impressions for the algorithm. Networking works as well. I am really excited after being laid off for 10 months from my PMO/APMO Director & Delivery Managment role to be working with I’m happy to share that I’m starting a new position as a (Remote) Release Train Engineer and Agile Consultant at Zelis !I found this opportunity through:?? Linkedin networking connections via The Very Agile PM blog?? They treated me with respect and professionalism throughout the entire process.?? They interviewed and made decisions in less than 2 weeks. For all of you still laid off, the market is picking up. A lot of my connections were hired this week. Keep networking and showcasing your skills. Never stop learning! Tough times never last, tough people do.

I will also be traveling back to the East Coast in NJ in 10 days and getting to finally meet the WONDERFUL Lucie Ellis, SHRM-SCP, PgMP, RMP, Prosci, PMP, A-CSM, MS who has just been so amazing during my journey. Lucy is a wonderful example of empowered women supporting and empowering other women.

Well, I reestablished Quantam Consulting in Washington State and the good folks at ZenBusiness and State Farm helped me get all of the updated paperwork and insurance I needed in WA. I had my own company in RI and let it cease when I took the role with my last employers.

At my company, Quantam Consulting, we believe technology thrives when it serves a deeper purpose. That's why Quan Tam (关心), "to care deeply," guides everything we do. We leverage experience, technology, and genuine connection to craft innovative, holistic solutions that empower our clients, not just to achieve their goals, but thrive in the ever-evolving future. Through a collaborative approach and Agile methodologies, we become trusted partners, ensuring exceptional results that fuel success.

I am coming out with another book next year so stay tuned for that.

If there is a topic you would like for me to cover or if you want to do a collaboration, DM Me.

Have a WONDERFUL, Labor Day Weekend!

Congratulations! I am hopeful knowing your job hunt has successfully ended. I have seen far too many groups fail to properly plan for holidays through code/change freezes, reduced staffing, marketing and sales budgets internally and for clients. In my opinion, these should be planned far in advance and brought to the planning process for any project or program that goes beyond the end of October.
