Holiday Parties at Alter Brewing – Great Beer, Great Strategy

Holiday Parties at Alter Brewing – Great Beer, Great Strategy

Statistics show two leading reactions when people think of company holiday parties, and it’s an even split – joy and dread.? But in a post-covid world there is growing sentiment that companies should double down on investing in this time honored, if slightly maligned, tradition.? Not the lamp-shade wearing, copy machine tom-foolery parts of the tradition, but the culture and team building ones.? End-of-year recognition, morale and unity are still valued concepts for employees and may be more important than ever.? And according to the Quartz Business Journal, the biggest mistake companies make with holiday parties is not having them at all.?

?During the Great Depression when many workers had little at home, the company holiday party was solidified as an American tradition.? But the tradition took a hit in recent years due to covid, budget cuts and (sometimes) bad behavior. ?Yet it appears the party’s making a comeback, and more because of competitive strategy than providing a venue for the boss to make holiday disco great again.? Andy Challenger, senior VP of a Chicago-based employment consulting firm has surveyed end-of-year celebrations for 20 years and says that the practice is on the rise. ?Businesses are opting for in-person events as part of their effort to reduce turnover and forge organizational “connective tissue” in a tight labor market.? According to Challenger, a leading reason Americans are quitting jobs at historic rates is due to at-home and remote work, which has deteriorated connectivity, making it easier for people to seek other opportunities guilt-free.? Pulling associates beyond the screen and encouraging them to interact in person may feel like shoving your child into the gym for the school dance, but it might be just what the doctor ordered for a remote and isolated work force.? And its still good karma for the traditional and hybrid office too, as shared experiences and displays of organizational gratitude foster a greater sense of pride and belonging amongst coworkers.

?Forbes advises that events should be inclusive and bring people from multiple levels within the organization together, with the goal of creating a unifying experience for a gathering of diverse people.? If done right, the net effect will be a positive one regardless of pre-conceived notions about holiday parties.? Forbes does mention that alternative gestures can/should be provided for those uninterested in attending group events, but the ultimate goal is to bring people together.?

?At Alter, we’ve been bringing people together since 2015, so we make planning your event super easy.? That, along with making kick ass beer, is what we do.? Oh, we also have cocktails, wine and, yes, great food too.? Our offering is as diverse as your team.? The good news is that with Alter, we’ll do all the work for you so you can sit back and watch your team bond.? Just keep in mind, holiday disco music is by request only.
