A Holiday Message of Appreciation to My Family, Friends and Colleagues
Navigating Challenges and Embracing Change in 2024
2024 has been a year of significant challenges and changes for many of us. For me, it marked a turning point in my career. After six and a half years of dedicated service, I was unceremoniously and inexplicably demoted to a position without any direct reports. This unexpected shift was not just a professional setback but also a personal challenge that tested my resilience and determination.
In my new role, I was tasked with a near-impossible mission with no team to help me. It felt like I was being set up to fail. However, I chose to view this challenge as an opportunity to demonstrate my capabilities and prove my worth.
Drawing inspiration from the book Lead Like a Marine by John Warren and John Thompson, I approached this task with the mindset of a warrior. As Warren and Thompson emphasize, "Run towards a challenge, assemble your fireteam, and win your next battle." This quote resonated deeply with me as I navigated through the complexities of my new role.
In the face of adversity, I adopted the Marine Corps' principles of adaptability, initiative, and courage. I assembled a resilient team of individuals who reported to others, laid out a mission and offered the support they needed to succeed. As Warren and Thompson highlight, "The U.S. Marines Corps is the greatest fighting force on the planet, but it’s so much more than that: it’s a factory for producing first-rate leaders, problem-solvers, and innovators."
In late summer, Josh Woodward was promoted to CEO and asked me to be his second in command as Lima One's Chief of Staff. With his support and that of others, we moved to a culture of trust, respect, support, and accountability. This transformation was a testament to the power of strong leadership and the importance of fostering a collaborative environment.

Within a month, not only had I regained my two teams, but I had also added another. With their help, we were able to overcome some huge challenges together. This experience underscored the importance of teamwork and the power of collective effort. Leading from the front, I ensured that I was always there to support and guide my team, embodying the principle that true leaders lead by example and are servants to those that report up to them.
Last Christmas was emotionally challenging for me, as I faced uncertainty and adversity in my career. However, this year is different. After overcoming these challenges and with the support of my loving wife, family, teams and leadership, I feel a renewed sense of purpose and optimism.
As we move forward into 2025, I encourage everyone facing similar challenges to embrace them with the spirit of a Marine. Remember, every setback is an opportunity for a comeback. Run towards your challenges, assemble your fireteam, and win your next battle.
I wish each of you the best in your battles of the coming year.
