??????Holiday job seeking is not scary

When someone starts a new job in January or February, when do you think they applied and interviewed?

I have spoken with so many people that think the holidays are the absolute worst time of year for a job search. But the holiday season could actually be the best time to unwrap a new job opportunity if you approach it right. While holiday hiring may slow down a bit, it doesn’t stop. So neither should you! Here are five reasons why decking the halls and job hunting can be the ultimate combo.

Less Competition, More Opportunities

Because so many folks are stuck in the mindset that the end of the year is a job-search dead zone, there’s less competition. Fewer resumes mean a better chance for yours to stand out.

Become a Networking Machine

The holidays are prime time to meet people; end-of-year parties, both in-person and virtual, are great opportunities to connect. Get your elevator pitch ready like it’s your secret recipe — You never know when you might run into someone who can introduce you to someone that is hiring. Also, consider sending out holiday cards or messages to your professional contacts. You might think that is odd but never pass on an opportunity to set yourself apart and do something memorable.

Optimize your Downtime

Holiday downtime doesn’t have to mean endless Netflix marathons. This is a golden opportunity to focus on your job search. Take a moment between sips of hot cocoa to spruce up your LinkedIn profile, update your resume, and jot down your accomplishments from the year. The end of the year is the perfect time to polish your personal brand.

Keep the Momentum Rolling

If you’ve already kicked off your job search, now’s not the time to go the extra mile. Even if you slow down, you can still take small steps that will keep you moving forward. Reducing LinkedIn doom scrolling by 50% could still have you in a position to find your next amazing opportunity in Q1. Set your resolutions now and if your goal is to find something new, don’t hesitate — apply to one job today.

Companies Are Still Hiring

While some companies may be more focused on eggnog than hiring, others are still making moves. In fact, many need to finish hiring before the year's end due to budget constraints. They might also want to bring someone on board who’s ready to go by the time the ball drops on New Year’s Eve. Plus, with seasonal or temporary roles, you could find yourself staying on for good.

And hey, extra holiday cash?
Yes, please.

Wrapping It All Up

Looking for a job might not be on top of your holiday to-do list, but making it a priority is a great idea. Even if you only spend an hour or two each week, that’s time well-spent. By the time the new year rolls in, you’ll have an updated resume, a sharper personal brand, and a head start on landing that next amazing opportunity.

Get motivated and give yourself a gift — your next awesome job.
