Facebook Warns Group Admins to Shape Up?
In the wake of Reddit's recent moderator conflict, Facebook is rolling out a new update that might raise some eyebrows among group admins. This week, reports have emerged that Facebook is notifying some group admins to become more active in moderating their groups, or risk having another member assigned to the role.
This shift in approach by Meta, Facebook's parent company, could stem from the issues faced by Reddit, which saw subreddit moderators protesting and locking their communities due to controversial changes. Reddit subsequently took over moderation of some subreddits to counter the impact of such actions.
The move by Facebook seems to aim at maintaining engagement and ad opportunities within groups. Whilst it might unsettle some group managers who could potentially lose control, Meta's intention is likely to prevent groups from becoming inactive due to lack of moderation. However, the prospect of automatically assigning new admins could be met with mixed reactions. This development highlights the evolving dynamics of online communities and platforms' efforts to sustain engagement, whilst preventing disarray caused by moderator inactivity.
In any case, for social media managers and brands alike, it might just be time to dust off the cobwebs on any dormant communities...
‘Fulfilled by TikTok’ Launched in the UK?
TikTok is determined to replicate its in-stream shopping success from its Chinese version into Western markets. Despite an initial lukewarm response, the platform is launching the "Fulfilled by TikTok" program in the UK. Under this initiative, TikTok acts as the intermediary, streamlining product delivery for UK customers. Merchants provide their products to TikTok's fulfilment centre, enabling same-day order fulfilment until 7pm, Monday to Saturday. TikTok's strategy includes hosting its own products within the app to enhance eCommerce offerings and build trust among users.
While in-stream shopping has been a major revenue driver for TikTok's Chinese counterpart, the Western audience has been less responsive. However, the potential earnings are too significant for TikTok to ignore, especially considering its efforts to provide supplementary income to creators. Douyin, the Chinese version, reported a 320% increase in product sales in 2022. Now, TikTok is making a big push to replicate this success outside of China, aiming to capitalise on its market presence and facilitate more revenue opportunities for both the platform and retailers. The "Fulfilled by TikTok" program could become a game-changer, creating more ways for users to discover and purchase products in-stream, ultimately transforming the online shopping landscape.
