"The Holiday" Classic Home Swap

“The Holiday” is a movie about two ladies who are both coming out of bad relationships and decide to “home swap” as a means of getting away. One is a society column editor from London and the other is a movie producer from LA. The homes are stereotypical for the locale. The London home is actually a “quaint cottage” in slow paced Surrey and the Los Angeles home is top shelf glamour amongst Hollywood stars.
The movie portrays as well that homes take on the owner’s personality – or perhaps is it the other way around? Swapping for the characters in the movie thus turned out to be more than just homes and location but lifestyle as well as friends and associates. By discovering their new locale both of the ladies “found themselves” and were able to “move on” in a way that they couldn’t before.
Moving to a new home offers a new setting and many times a new life. As a real estate professional I have watched scenes like this play out. The empty-nester couple trades a large home in the country on several acres with a luxury town home with an elevator in town. The changes associated with this home swap are from exclusive and private, evenings and weekends at home lifestyle with urban pursuits of walking to shops and restaurants as well as nights out at the theater and museums. There is the trade off as well from high maintenance with free time spent doing yard work with turn-key where one can travel with ease.
The real estate agent often serves as both director and producer in helping people visualize what a new home along with life style would mean for their clients. Some people move into a rental short term to “try it out”, much like the home swap in the movie.
