Values Give Us Courage: How to Act When We Don't Know What to Do
Have you ever been in a situation where you didn't know what to do? Maybe you witnessed someone being mistreated or found yourself in the midst of a crisis. In those moments, it can be easy to feel overwhelmed and frozen, unsure of how to act. However, values can give us the courage we need to take action even when we're not sure what to do.
I was reflecting on the 2007 bridge collapsed and people ran to help stranded children. I believe that it was their values that compelled them to act and that our own values can do the same for us. Here are three takeaways from Koen's message, as well as three things you can do to put his advice into practice.
Takeaway #1: Values Compel Us to Action
I'd like to offer that, our values can compel us to take action, even in situations where we're not sure what to do. For example, if we value kindness, we may feel compelled to help someone who is in need, even if we're not sure how to do so. By holding onto our values, we can find the courage we need to act in difficult situations.
Takeaway #2: Doing Something Is Better Than Doing Nothing
I'd like to emphasize, that it's important to do something, even if we're not sure what the "right" thing to do is. Inaction can be just as damaging as harmful actions, as it allows harm to continue unchecked. By taking even a small step toward helping or standing up for what we believe in, we can make a difference.
Takeaway #3: Practice Acting on Your Values
The universe will continually present us with opportunities to act on our values and we should practice taking action even when we're unsure of what to do. By doing so, we can build up our courage and become more confident in our ability to make a positive impact.

Now that we've explored some key takeaways, here are three things you can do to put his advice into practice:
Things to Do #1: Reflect on Your Values
Take some time to reflect on the values that are most important to you. What do you stand for? What do you believe in? By getting clear on your values, you can better understand what drives you and what you're willing to stand up for.
Things to Do #2: Look for Opportunities to Act
Keep your eyes open for opportunities to act on your values, even in small ways. Maybe it's speaking up when you witness something unjust or offering a kind word to someone who is struggling. By practicing taking action, you'll become more comfortable doing so when it really counts.
Things to Do #3: Hold Yourself Accountable
Finally, hold yourself accountable to your values. If you see an opportunity to act but feel hesitant, remind yourself of what you stand for and why it's important. By staying true to your values, you can build the courage you need to make a positive impact in the world.
Values can give us the courage we need to act when we don't know what to do. By reflecting on our values, looking for opportunities to act, and holding ourselves accountable, we can become more confident in our ability to make a difference in the world. So the next time you find yourself unsure of what to do, remember: your values can be your guide.
