Hoarding Nightmare Clean! Green Space Project, Promotions & Job Success

As we go into Halloween, we've certainly had some scary projects and challenges that we've had to face! From multiple void cleans involving extreme hoarding to discovering new habitats living amongst them, it's not been a boring week at Dovetail.

Read on to see more and get to know some of our new processes for some of our clients...

The Nightmare Clean

On Friday last week, just as we were about to shut up shop for the weekend, we received an order from the Fire Brigade to attend a Void property that had been victim to severe hoarding. Our amazing office team came together to help, as the mess was that severe. Hundreds of cockroaches and other insects had taken over the space and had to be exterminated and removed.

Before the Waste was cleared and separated into bags.

It's important to note that hoarding can be a severe side effect of bad mental health, being so close to Mental Health Awareness Day, it reminded the team how extreme these conditions can be, and we'd like to spread some awareness surrounding it in this article.

In a lot of these instances, the mess is a reflection of what is going on inside their mind, it's important to not stereotype these as "dirty" or "lazy" people but to try and find a solution to the source of these issues.

Statistics Linking Hoarding and Depression

  • Co-Occurrence: Around 50%-60% of people with hoarding disorder also experience major depressive disorder. This overlap suggests a significant link between these conditions, where each can intensify the symptoms of the other.
  • Severity of Symptoms: Those with both depression and hoarding disorder tend to experience more severe hoarding symptoms than those with hoarding alone. Depression exacerbates hoarding behaviour by reducing motivation and increasing emotional attachment to possessions.
  • Social Impact: Studies show that people with both hoarding and depression experience greater levels of social isolation, which worsens both conditions. Nearly 70% of individuals with hoarding disorder report difficulty engaging in social activities, often due to the shame associated with their living conditions.

We're proud of the team and can't thank everyone enough for stepping up to help and getting the job done as a matter of urgency.

The job will now begin its next phase and be cleaned by specialists, removing any remaining biohazardous waste and substances.

If you or anyone you know is struggling with depression, hoarding disorder, or anything that is leading to a similar outcome, you can find non-judgmental support.

The Green Space Project - Midland Heart Collaboration

Earlier in the year, Dovetail Group came together with Midland Heart to collaborate on the Green Space Project. The project involved setting up community days within local communities and coming together to plant wildflower seeds to create greener environments for the public.

The days were a huge success with some great relationship-building with MH, DTG, and the local community.

The Perennials are starting to flower and pose many benefits for the environment:

  • Biodiversity - Wildflowers are a vital food source for pollinators like bees, butterflies, moths, flies, and wasps. Pollinators help protect crops from pests and are essential for the growth of many fruits and vegetables.
  • Pollinators - Wildflowers are a vital food source for pollinators like bees, butterflies, moths, flies, and wasps. In turn, pollinators help spread wildflower pollen, which allows the wildflowers to reproduce. They also help pollinate many of the fruits and vegetables we grow and protect them from pests.
  • Soil health - Wildflower roots create channels in the soil that improve water and air porosity. This helps prevent soil compaction and improves the soil's ability to hold water, which helps plants survive droughts.
  • Flooding - Wildflower meadows have complex root systems that help to mitigate flooding.

We're proud of our continued efforts with Midland Heart to create a greener future for all.

Job Success

This week has also been full of Winter Maintenance and prep. We've had our Tree Team mitigate risks in public areas by removing trees that may cause an issue in the winter.

Our Reactive teams have also been out repairing gutters and external water systems that have failed close to winter and therefore are in desperate need of a fix before we come into the bad weather and colder months.
