If you are old ugh I mean experienced like me you might remember that Def Lappard line "It is better to burn out than fade away" but is it really? Burnout absolutely is real and it sucks.
The business world is crazy especially these days, it is a results driven environment. Burnout has become a common and dangerous challenge.
Burnout does not just impact productivity it can also affect our mental health, personal relationships, and long term career satisfaction.
As someone who has worked through the highs and lows of intense work in the 美国军队 and with GNC with the intense work schedules and the constant push to accomplish the mission or hit our KPI's, I have learned a few key strategies to help keep burnout at bay.
Here is how you can protect yourself and find sustainable balance without sacrificing your career goals or mental health. Remember you can not pour from an empty cup.
1) PRIORITIZE YOUR SELF CARE AND MAKE IT A NON-NEGOTIABLE:
This hits very close to home, when work becomes overwhelming, self-care is often the first thing to go. But ignoring physical, mental, and emotional needs in pursuit of professional success is a REALLY fast track to burnout.
Make time everyday for activities that recharge you, even if it is just 15 minutes to go for a walk, sit in your yard and watch the squirrels, or catch up on a book. These small moments add up, keeping your stress levels manageable.
If you are finding it hard to take time for your self-care, remind yourself that like they say in Alcoholics Anonymous "Taking care of yourself IS NOT selfish it is essential."
When you are running on empty, you won't be able to contribute your best work. Self-care isn't just about health and wellness; it's about doing things that fill you up, make you happy, feel grounded outside of the job.
2) SET BOUNDARIES AND STICK TO THEM:
This is especially hard for HYBRID workers or home based business owners. In our work culture we are "Always On", so setting boundaries is crucial.
While it might feel productive to answer emails late at night or constantly be available, this habit in unsustainable.
Instead, set hard boundaries for when and where you work and communicate them to your team, yes it is Halloween, yes we are taking our kids trick or treating even though it is end of month. Set your week hours and strive to leave your devices yes laptops too alone outside these hours.
If you are in a leadership role, model this behavior. If you send messages to your team after hours, consider using the delay send function, so emails will be delivered during WORKING hours.
Encouraging a culture of respect for personal time helps prevent burnout on a company level too.
3) USE YOUR TIME OFF WISELY:
Yes I will be on my second cruise this year woo hoo! Many people let vacation days go unused. thinking they will impress their employers by showing dedication. However, pushing through without breaks can lead to severe burnout, anxiety, depression, reducing productivity and enthusiasm.
Schedule regular time off, even if it is for a long weekend, and just unplug. If you struggle to step away, plan out of office activities that captures your full attention, making it easier to detach from work.
Try not to view PTO as a luxury. Taking time to recharge is so important to maintain long term productivity, motivation and success.
4) CREATE CLEAR DEFINED GOALS AND CELEBRATE YOUR SMALL WINS:
Like James Clear talks about in his amazing book "Atomic Habits" you have to stack and celebrate your wins no matter how small they seem to you.
Burnout often stems from feeling overwhelmed or lacking direction. Clear goals and milestones give you a sense of progress, making work feel less daunting and more meaningful giving you VERTICAL MOMENTUM see what I did there lol.
Break larger goals and projects into smaller tasks, and celebrate when you hit these goals. Recognizing and celebrating small wins whether through personal acknowledgement or within your team gives a boost of motivation and holds off burnout.
By celebrating each step, you can keep the bigger picture in focus without feeling like you are constantly hustling and grinding like Gary Vaynerchuk preaches without results.
5) SEEK HELP AND SUPPORT WHEN NEEDED:
YOU ARE NOT ALONE!
When workloads, deadlines, stress or frustration become overwhelming, reaching out for help is so important. Talk with your manager or HR if you need adjustments to your workload, and communicate openly with trusted teammates.
Many workplaces offer (EAPs) or Employee Assistance Programs or mental health resources PLEASE take advantage of them.

If you are like me and struggle with the idea of asking for help when we need it. remember that reaching out for help shows strength not weakness.
Knowing when to ask for help and support and advocate for YOURSELF is one of the most valuable professional skills you can develop.
6) PRACTICE MINDFULNESS AND STRESS MANAGEMENT TECHNIQUES:
I use the the three minute rule taught to me by Navy Seal Rich Diviney , and I meditate or just sit in silence for ten minutes each morning like Navy Seal Jon Macaskill taught me.
Burnout thrives on unchecked stress. Mindfulness practices like Will Schneider ★ teaches like deep breathing, meditation, or even simple stretching, can help you stay present and reduce stress.
These practices do not need to be hard or take up much of your time: just a few minutes a day can make a HUGE difference. We all get 1440 minutes a day, use them wisely! Incorporate stress management into your morning routine as a proactive strategy.
Whether it is mindfulness, exercising, journaling, build practices that hel you process and release stress regularly rather than letting it build up till it and explodes.
7) FIND PURPOSE AND MEANING IN YOUR WORK:
My goal this year is to help 30 million people find their purpose and mission again. Yes it is a big goal but like they say "If your goals don't scare you they aren't big enough."
Burnout is often triggered by the feeling that your work doesn't matter, and you are busting your butt for what a paycheck? Reflect on why you're doing what you're doing.
Identify the aspects of your job that lights you up and find most fulfilling or aligns with your values, and focus on those.
When work feels meaningful, you're more likely to stay engaged, happy and less likely to burn out. If your current role isn't aligned with your values, consider speaking with a mentor or exploring professional development options.
Sometimes a slight shift within your role can make a HUGE difference in how connected you feel to your work. Like the song says "sometimes a change will do you good."
SSSSSSSSOOOOOOOOOOO....
Avoiding burnout is about creating a lifestyle that prioritizes the long game and not just the short game. It involves setting boundaries, taking PTO, and finding meaning and purpose in your life.
PLEASE realize how important self-care is, By proactively managing stress levels, you set yourself up for long term success, happiness, satisfaction in your personal life and career.
Remember sustained success is not about working harder it is about working smarter, living a balanced life and protecting your mental well being.
I hope this helped someone today. Are you okay? Really?
