HMRC launch investigation into self employed workers.

HMRC launch investigation into self employed workers.

It can be expected that companies in the construction industry engaging self-employed contractors will be facing an investigation into their employment practices in the coming months.

It was recently announced that HMRC are launching a specialist unit to investigate companies that avoid paying workers with statutory rights and protections by wrongly classifying them as self-employed.

The new HMRC unit will be called the Employment and Intermediaries team and they will investigate companies that use large numbers of self-employed workers. HMRC state 'If we find that companies have misclassified individuals as self-employed, we will take all necessary steps to make sure that they pay the appropriate tax, NIC's, interest and penalties.'

Navigating the ins and outs of HMRC policy around CIS is difficult, especially for those who don't have knowledge and experience of the system. If you have concerns about the status of your subcontractors then call us and we will talk you through the HMRC guidance.
