From ‘I’m Bored’ to Burnout: The Real Parent Struggle This Fall

I have three words for you: back to school. Yes, it’s that time of year, especially for those who are responsible for kids. It’s bittersweet — the end of summer, but also the end of long days filled with planning activities, snacks, and listening to endless “I’m bored” complaints. It’s the fresh beginning of a new school year and the start of juggling drop-offs, pick-ups, and after-school activities!

All this while also continuing to be effective employees, community organizers, caregivers, and just everyday superheroes!

When you sign up to become a parent, you are signing up for equal measures of joy and worry. In our modern society, with micro families and communities making it harder for parents to allow unsupervised real-life play, it often feels like there is no respite, no reprieve from always being “ON” as a parent. The complexity only compounds if you have multiple children and/or if both partners are working. Is it any surprise, then, that on August 28th, 2024, the Surgeon General of the United States, Dr. Vivek Murthy , released an advisory to call attention to the stress and mental health concerns facing parents and caregivers and to outline what we should be doing to address them?

A recent study by the American Psychological Association (APA) revealed that 48 percent of parents say most days their stress is completely overwhelming, compared to 26 percent of other adults who reported the same. They are navigating traditional hardships of parenting — worrying about money and safety, struggling to get enough sleep — as well as new stressors, including omnipresent screens, a youth mental health crisis, and widespread fear about the future. Parents are stretched for time. Compared with just a few decades ago, mothers and fathers spend more time working and more time caring for their children, leaving them less time for rest, leisure, and relationships.

In the Surgeon General’s Advisory, Dr. Murthy encouraged policy and cultural shifts to address the universal stressors parents are experiencing. And yet, many of us can't wait for policies to change the way we feel in our homes and workplaces.

National Partnership for Women and Families Reception, Chicago, IL (L-R: Rashmi Rao, Joanna Popper, Jocelyn Fyre, Uma Iyer, Judy Litchman)

We need to bring our collective voices together and advocate for change. Recently, I had the incredible opportunity to attend the reception at the National Women's Law Center in Chicago, IL and learn more about the incredible work, Jocelyn Frye, Judy Litchman and their teams at National Partnership for Women and Families are doing in advocating for foundational issues such as women's and maternal health rights, and paid family leave.

This is also why we created HLWF ALLIANCE — to actively shape the narrative surrounding women’s roles as primary healthcare decision-makers and caregivers within families and society at large.

LET’S GO!
