Hitting Refresh on SharePoint and More - Part 4

This is the fourth and final post in a series to share our journey and inspire transformation in your organizations. Here are parts one, two and three. As we have done the last two years in May, today we announced major updates to SharePoint, OneDrive and much more - this year back at the SharePoint Conference in Las Vegas.

SharePoint delivers content collaboration for the modern workplace across Microsoft 365. We power anywhere access to all your files with OneDrive, real-time document collaboration with Office, teamwork with Outlook and Teams, intelligent intranets with Stream and Yammer and transformative business processes with PowerApps and Flow. 

SharePoint is the most innovative solution in the industry. We pioneered combining document management and web publishing with SharePoint, bringing ECM to the cloud with SharePoint Online and introducing AI with the Microsoft Graph underpinning many of our announcements at Build and at the SharePoint Conference. Our biggest news today is another step to the future with SharePoint spaces that will help people create dynamic 3D experiences in minutes. SharePoint is the only unified content collaboration solution to span files, web sites and soon mixed reality scenes.

Here is the back story on SharePoint spaces that I hinted at in part two. Three years ago I was experimenting with a variety of new web technologies. It struck me that just like with developing web sites in the past, building 3-D, real-time content was too hard and that there was an opportunity for a content collaboration solution to simplify this. I realized that expanding beyond HTML and REST to WebGL and WebSockets would open up new possibilities for both end users and developers. Last year, I committed to this by writing a short plan titled “Intranet Meet the Metaverse” and building an incubation team that brought to life what we are sharing today. We are early but I am proud of our amazing team’s creativity and excited to get your feedback on creating engaging experiences for your employees with the preview later this year. Much more to come.

SharePoint has the best community in technology and is growing faster than ever. The magic of SharePoint is that it is not just a product but a community where people can learn from each other to grow their skills, contribution to their organizations and careers. There are so many possibilities building on the latest cloud technologies and we are excited to show how SharePoint brings them together this week and at hundreds of community events around the world. The SharePoint community is growing faster than ever with Microsoft 365 as 400,000 organizations are now using SharePoint Online. Our new SharePoint Framework that we released just last year is already the most used experience extensibility platform in Office 365 and it will grow even faster with the integration inside Microsoft Teams that we announced at Microsoft Build and detailed this week.

The next stop for Office, SharePoint and OneDrive innovation is Microsoft Ignite. We are excited to share the latest news and best practices and hear your feedback at the SharePoint Conference this week. This series is called “Hitting Refresh on SharePoint and More”. The biggest “more” is Microsoft Office. As we showed in the keynote, we have a lot of exciting capabilities coming with the next leap in collaboration, intelligence and security in our Office applications on the PC, Mac, web, iOS and Android – all powered by SharePoint and OneDrive in Microsoft 365. We have much more in the works for Office, OneDrive and SharePoint.
