Hitting Our Stride? You Tell Me

Hitting Our Stride? You Tell Me

The team at Hooniverse generously gave me the opportunity to drive a re-launch of their podcast. Now that we're a few episodes in, I wanted to explain what we're up to, because it's so much more than a couple of dudes with mics.

Set The Hook - Shamelessly Stolen

Inspired by Jay Acunzo and influenced by other podcasts, including the outstanding monologues Glynn Washington always starts Snap Judgement with, and the arresting and excellent Cocaine & Rhinestones by Tyler Mahan Coe, I wanted to do something that welcomes our listeners to each episode with more than the usual "hey guys, today we're blah blah blah..." Not only is that unimaginative, it's just plain boring. As a listener, I wouldn't feel valued or respected hearing that every week.

So instead, as a reward for the priceless gift of their attention, I'm giving our audience a 3-5 minute story up top. They're always related to the episode theme, but it's not immediately obvious how. And I hope they're told in a captivating way. From there, we go into a tight show with topics chosen to show the places where auto enthusiasm rubs up against business, family life, economic factors, and more. The whole aim is to squash the silos flat and provide some perspective from the edges. Because that's where the nuance is, and in nuance lies story.

Do Me A Favor

Let me know what you think. Are we amusing ourselves? How's our swiped story framework working for you? (I mean, we still have to put in the work to write and produce the intro segments, so it's not like we're coasting on someone else's coat tails). Podcasting is a vibrant medium that's gloriously democratic. Let's make sure it's not homogenized.

What are you listening to out there that grabs you by the earlobes right away and won't let go?

Here's the last few eps for your enjoyment.

This was really good and I’m glad the mic issues are behind you. Touch not the Cat was also good. But you need a full separate podcast for your intros.
