Hitting 10,000 Steps while Traveling can be Beneficial to making a trip Successful

The concept of aiming for 10,000 steps a day as a measure of physical activity originated in Japan in the 1960s when a pedometer called "manpo-kei" (which translates to "10,000 steps meter") was marketed. The number was chosen somewhat arbitrarily, but it gained popularity due to its simplicity and the belief that it represented a significant but achievable daily goal for improving health.? However, recent research says that as little as 4,000 has a positive health impact, but most research agrees that more steps you walk the better!

While we can argue the actual number of steps (that decision is for you), getting in steps as a daily routine while on business trips is not only feasible but highly beneficial for your health and productivity. For the sake of this article, I am going to keep the starting goal at 10,000.? So, let’s jump into the WHY:

?1. Combat Sedentary Behavior: Prolonged periods of sedentary behavior have been linked to various health risks, including obesity, cardiovascular disease, and metabolic disorders.

?2. Boost Physical and Mental Well-being: Regular physical activity, such as walking, is known to boost both physical and mental well-being. It increases blood flow to the brain, which can enhance cognitive function, creativity, and problem-solving abilities—essential qualities for productive business meetings and decision-making.

3. Maintain Energy Levels: Incorporating regular walking breaks can help maintain energy levels and prevent midday slumps. Walking stimulates circulation, delivering oxygen and nutrients to your muscles and brain, which can help combat fatigue and keep you feeling alert and energized throughout the day.

4. Networking Opportunities: Walking provides an excellent opportunity for informal networking and relationship-building. Instead of confining conversations to boardrooms or hotel lobbies, suggest taking a walking meeting or stroll around the city with colleagues or clients. Not only does this foster a more relaxed and open atmosphere, but it also allows you to reap the health benefits of physical activity while conducting business.? This could be your morning workout… a long morning walk to explore your destination with a colleague or business partner to not just foster a relationship, but to discover the city.?

5. Set a Healthy Example: You have the opportunity to set a positive example for your colleagues. By prioritizing physical activity and making an effort to achieve your steps, you demonstrate the importance of maintaining a healthy lifestyle, even in the midst of busy work schedules. Your commitment to health and well-being can inspire others to adopt similar habits, creating a culture of wellness within your organization.

I have two wearables that measure steps (technically three, but I never look at my iPhone).?? Yes, I am kind of a geek with data.? I love my Garmin watch as I use it daily for various activity tracking, but I also recently purchased a wearable ring. Regardless, on how you track your steps, I recommend that you find a way.??

Making a conscious effort to incorporate at least 10,000 steps into your daily routine while traveling not only beneficial for your health but also essential for maintaining productivity and well-being. By prioritizing physical activity, you can combat sedentary behavior, boost energy levels, enhance cognitive function, and set a positive example for your colleagues. So next time you find yourself on a business trip, lace up those walking shoes and make every step count toward a healthier, more successful journey.

Another great article and reminder Michael. I’m definitely going to work towards 10,000 steps a day this week while traveling for work. My favorite win-win from your article is using walking to connect with others. I love doing this whenever I can find another person who values fitness too.
