Hitmarker Highlights
Hello there ??
Welcome to the latest installment of Hitmarker Highlights!
Last week's PlayStation Showcase included some huge reveals, including the long-rumored Metal Gear Solid 3 remake and Bungie's Marathon reboot. ??
Unfortunately, a week in the gaming industry would not be complete without more layoff news, this time Disney Mirrorverse developer Kabam has been hit with a second round of job cuts.
Still, it's another week with more good than bad to report, so let's keep the mood high with some hot jobs!
These were the 10 most clicked gaming opportunities on Hitmarker in the last week:
It's been a really busy week. Over 150 new jobs have popped up over since last week. You can check them out here. ??
Other news ???
This week's biggest event was the PlayStation Showcase, which featured several announcements from Sony and its partners. Sony unveiled Project Q, its new streaming handheld, and Bungie has chosen to reboot the pre-Halo Marathon franchise. ??
Microsoft likely felt left out as it teased that a new Psychonauts game may be revealed at its Summer Showcase in June.
Things are a lot darker at Kabam, however, as it laid off 12% of its staff after restructuring.
We publish 4–5 new articles every weekday, covering everything in the industry, from reveals to rumors to business news. The rest of the articles can be found here.
This week's insight comes courtesy of Egon, a game developer who has worked for companies both inside and outside of his own country.
He gave us a great insight into his remote working life last week and outlined the challenges he has faced when it comes to tax, benefits, equipment, and more.
He also asked if we could dive back into our data on remote job opportunities, but this time look at Remote (Location) opportunities rather than just looking at Remote (Anywhere).?
He assumes that these sorts of roles would be on the rise, even though Remote (Anywhere) are not, so let's see... ??
Firstly, we have to note that we only have Remote (Location) data from 2020, as we first introduced location-specific remote listings in March of that year, due to COVID-19.
Secondly, it's key to let you know that we're only going to the country level in terms of the location hierarchy, Remote (City) and Remote (State) aren't included here.?
With that being said, it's striking how similar the pattern is in terms of the availability of Remote (Location) gaming jobs. If you think back to last week's chart, we saw an increase from 2020 to 2021 and from 2021 to 2022, but 2023 took a dive, down to 3.1% from 7.1%.
With Remote (Location) jobs the percentages are far higher, but the drop from 2022 to 2023 is equally pronounced, 39% to 17%, a reduction of over half once again. Like with last week's chart, the peak popularity of Remote (Location) jobs was in 2022.
Perhaps all of the same reasons we mentioned last week also apply to Remote (Location) vacancies, not just Remote (Anywhere) vacancies? And maybe the availability of gaming jobs that allow the successful candidate to work remotely is truly on the wane? Sorry Egon! ??
Ever wondered what we're up to away from this newsletter? Well, you can find out on our LinkedIn and Twitter pages, where we post the latest gaming news, jobs, and more.
Here are a couple of our best posts this week, hand-picked by our Community Manager, Rae!
With the popularity of esports growing, an increasing number of people are looking for work in what is a relatively new industry. ?? ??? ♀?
This week here on LinkedIn, we've compiled a list of the best esports jobs available, ranging from marketing to coaching to content creation.
If none of those seem like a good fit, keep in mind that there are even more esports jobs to be found here!?
Moving away from esports, quality assurance, or QA for short, remains a hugely popular sector in the gaming industry. Many positions are geared toward those with less experience who are looking for their first step into the industry.???
Over on Twitter, we've put together a neat little thread of QA roles at some of gaming's biggest companies, including PlayStation, Nintendo, and Ubisoft.?
If none of the roles in the thread above is a good fit for you, feel free to browse the 80+ QA positions on our platform here.
The end ??
Once again, thanks for reading Hitmarker Highlights! We look forward to seeing you again next week. ??
