Hitmarker Highlights
Hello there ??
It's Thursday, which means it's time for another Hitmarker Highlights!
This week has been a bit of a mixed bag, again, with the UK's Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) blocking Microsoft's acquisition of Activision Blizzard for the unexpected reason of potentially harming competitors in the cloud gaming space.
There are some clear wins too, though, with Nintendo confirming its attendance at Gamescom and workers at Sega of America deciding to unionize to better protect their interests. We're also bringing you even more Ws with our usual advice and insight.??
Let's get to it!
Hot jobs ??
These were the 10 most popular listings on our platform this week:
More than 100 new roles have suddenly appeared in the past week. Check them out here .
Big news ??
Other news ???
Nintendo can't stay out of the news again this week, confirming its attendance at Gamescom 2023 while also winning in court once more, with a hacker ordered to pay a whopping $10 million USD fine and to give 25–30% of his income to the company. There have been even more victories, including the successful launch of the long-awaited Dead Island 2 and Sega of America's workers choosing to unionize! ??
We cover most aspects of the gaming industry every weekday. You can find the rest of our latest articles here .
Hiring insights ??
This will be the last time we use candidate data for a long while, we promise! ??
Which age band do you fit into? ??
If you're 18–24, you're in the most competitive bracket with almost half of all Hitmarker users in the first quarter of the year being young adults ("Zoomers"). When you contrast the number of people aged 18–24 looking for gaming jobs with the number of entry-level/junior-level gaming jobs available, it's easy to see why many find it so darn difficult to find gainful employment.
Now where are our Millennials at? When put together the 25–34 and 35–44 age brackets almost match the 18–24 bracket for candidate volume, but still fall 1% short. Around a third of Hitmarker users are 25–34, with around a tenth being 35–44, while around a tenth are 45–54 or 55+. The latter is unsurprisingly our smallest age demographic, but at over 5% it's still a lot larger than we would expect given the nature of Hitmarker and the video game industry!
We see you out here still grinding, Gen X. ??
Getting social ??
We're still posting content to our LinkedIn and Twitter pages daily, including news, insights, jobs, and more. Check them out if you want to stay on top of what's going on in the industry!
Here are two of our most well-received posts from the past week:
We shared a list of the best free gaming career resources last week over here on LinkedIn , and since you all seemed to enjoy it, we thought it would be a good idea to make another!
This list includes areas such as community management, narrative writing, and art, with some general job-hunting advice sprinkled on top. If you missed last week's post, it's here .
To put the advice into action, you can find all currently open vacancies here ! (Just remember to use our filtering system! ??)
If there is one industry sector that we can safely say is one of the most popular, it is without a doubt social media. It's often one of the best ways to help a brand grow, typically allows for a lot of creativity, and a great number of people already have some level of experience with Twitter, Instagram, and/or LinkedIn.
If you want to put your social media skills to use, check out this Twitter thread where we share some of the most exciting opportunities available for all experience levels! ??
The end ??
