Hitmarker Highlights

Hello there ??

It's Thursday, which means it's time for another Hitmarker Highlights!

This week has been a bit of a mixed bag, again, with the UK's Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) blocking Microsoft's acquisition of Activision Blizzard for the unexpected reason of potentially harming competitors in the cloud gaming space.

There are some clear wins too, though, with Nintendo confirming its attendance at Gamescom and workers at Sega of America deciding to unionize to better protect their interests. We're also bringing you even more Ws with our usual advice and insight.??

Let's get to it!

Hot jobs ??

These were the 10 most popular listings on our platform this week:

More than 100 new roles have suddenly appeared in the past week. Check them out here .

? The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) blocks Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision Blizzard

  • The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has blocked Microsoft's acquisition of Activision Blizzard in the UK, citing concerns regarding the company's control of the cloud gaming market.
  • According to reports, Microsoft was expecting the CMA's approval and planned to close the deal soon for $95 per share, despite the Federal Trade Commission's (FTC) earlier attempt to block the move.
  • The CMA has claimed that Microsoft already controls 60–70% of the cloud gaming market and that its purchase of Activision Blizzard could cause problems for competitors in the future.

Other news ???

Nintendo can't stay out of the news again this week, confirming its attendance at Gamescom 2023 while also winning in court once more, with a hacker ordered to pay a whopping $10 million USD fine and to give 25–30% of his income to the company. There have been even more victories, including the successful launch of the long-awaited Dead Island 2 and Sega of America's workers choosing to unionize! ??

Hiring insights ??

This will be the last time we use candidate data for a long while, we promise! ??

Which age band do you fit into? ??

If you're 18–24, you're in the most competitive bracket with almost half of all Hitmarker users in the first quarter of the year being young adults ("Zoomers"). When you contrast the number of people aged 18–24 looking for gaming jobs with the number of entry-level/junior-level gaming jobs available, it's easy to see why many find it so darn difficult to find gainful employment.

Now where are our Millennials at? When put together the 25–34 and 35–44 age brackets almost match the 18–24 bracket for candidate volume, but still fall 1% short. Around a third of Hitmarker users are 25–34, with around a tenth being 35–44, while around a tenth are 45–54 or 55+. The latter is unsurprisingly our smallest age demographic, but at over 5% it's still a lot larger than we would expect given the nature of Hitmarker and the video game industry!

We see you out here still grinding, Gen X. ??

If there is one industry sector that we can safely say is one of the most popular, it is without a doubt social media.
