It was a bizarre case.
A case that was in all the papers at the time.
It was in fact sensational.
Scandalously so and reporters, from all around the world greedily snapped up every detail that they could get their hands on.
They called her a hero. They lavished praise upon her, along with honors and accolades.
Meredith, however, did not feel like she could possible live up to their expectations.
As far as she was concerned she was not a hero.
Not really.
She only did what she had to do.
Acted as any would have if they had been placed in her shoes.
In her mind, and within the generous depths of her heart credit for her heroics went to other sources, other powers than her own. Her forebearers, their grace their wisdom and their strength guiding her toward safety and, ultimately toward victory.
In any case the rocky and perilous road to fame all began in the center of town, at a time when the nation had gone “dry”, during the heart of the great depression…
