Hitchhiker's Guide to Autonomy

The Autonomy Institute has established the North Star for a Path to Autonomy. National sovereignty and global productivity will go to the nations that deploy the Intelligent Infrastructure enabling Industry 4.0. After 5 years of collaborating with dozens of federal agencies and over 200 industry partners, we will see dozens of projects under development to help drive forward a clear Path to Commerce. Hundreds of leading scientists, engineers, developers, investors, and innovators are engaged.

Intelligent Infrastructure Economic Zones?will revitalize the nation.

Autonomous robotics brings the power of automation from the factory directly to our communities and cities. Not only will it allow us to bring back manufacturing to the United States, but it will?empower individuals; independent manufacturers, farmers, contractors, drivers, engineers, and many more.

Automation and Autonomy are about freeing us from dull, dirty, dangerous jobs. It is vital that our nation increases our productivity and exports. It is also critical to do this by empowering the individual and family unit, which is a key foundation of the United States.

Intelligent Infrastructure Will Spawn a National Revival:

The Economic Impact of Intelligent Infrastructure will be measured in the $billions and Save Lives. National sovereignty and global productivity will go to the nation that deploys the INTELLIGENT INFRASTRUCTURE enabling Industry 4.0.

As the United States moves to reestablish manufacturing leadership our productivity is dependent on our ability to deploy Intelligent Infrastructure?and automated/autonomous systems outside the factory. Industry 4.0 is driving a resurgence of manufacturing, infrastructure, and construction.

Intelligent Infrastructure, the Roads of the 21st Century

INTELLIGENT INFRASTRUCTURE (the foundation of ARPA-I) goes well beyond transportation and will be the brains of our economy. Providing advanced city services, resilient and carbon-free economies, closing the technology divide, enabling autonomous systems, and most important; securing data for people, cities, and governments. Creating millions of new jobs and economic growth nationwide.

Path to Commerce: https://buff.ly/3gWLE1w

Trying to deploy autonomous systems without Intelligent infrastructure is like trying to build the internet without networks. Replacing our Carbon Brains with Silicon versions treats the symptoms, not the problems. The fundamental challenges of mobility are optimization, orchestration, reducing emissions, and addressing Vision Zero. The root challenges can only be addressed with Intelligent Infrastructure. Why does the United States have the safest and most optimized air space? The Federal Aviation Administration systems of radars, transponders, beacons, antennas, GPS satellites, ground CORS, control towers, and weather systems.

Nobody doubts the massive impact autonomy will have on our society but few understand the critical need for Intelligent Infrastructure. Exceptional work has advanced the vehicle, but trying to deploy autonomous systems without Intelligent infrastructure is like trying to build the internet without networks.?Time to get "Street Smart" and deploy Intelligent Infrastructure via Intelligent Infrastructure Economic Zones. The Federal Infrastructure Bank and infrastructure investors are mobilizing $billions in capital to underwrite Intelligent Infrastructure Economic Zones. Accelerating the "Path to Commerce".

Intelligent Infrastructure, the Brains of Our Economy

Intelligent Infrastructure goes beyond mobility and?addresses the key challenges of our lifetime, providing advanced city services, resilient and carbon-free economies, closing the technology divide, enabling autonomous systems, and, most importantly, securing data for people, cities, and governments.

The Pursuit of Autonomy

Robotics and automation are meant to amplify “personal” service, NOT to remove the person! Stan Schneider had a great article on how autonomy is like the pursuit of happiness. https://buff.ly/3v0kNIS

The opportunity for society is immense. “The ultimate paradox is that this technology may become the powerful catalyst that we need to reclaim our humanity” John Hagel

Asimov's Law

Law of Autonomy, unleashing the next s-curve of productivity

Automation and Autonomy are foundational to a sustainable world economy, and Infrastructure is the foundation. Nations cannot defend democracy if they cannot maintain a strong infrastructure.

Transportation Departments are overwhelmed with a backlog of road replacements, filling potholes, resurfacing shoulders, maintaining medians, repairing bridges, upgrading systems, etc.

The next trillion-dollar company will come from the innovators that deploy intelligent and autonomous robotics for routine repairs.?

Moore's Law and Metcalfe's Law drove the last 70 years of increased productivity worldwide. Asimov's three basic laws will enable the powerful Law of Autonomy, unleashing the next s-curve of productivity.?

Where We’re Going, We Don’t Need Lines

With Intelligent Infrastructure, we fundamentally change the game. To use a phrase from DOC Brown:?“Lines? Where We’re Going, We Don’t Need Lines or Signs”.? We do not even need them for our trip to Mars.

As Ford said, if you ask someone with a horse what they need; they ask for a faster horse. Ask today's vehicle OEMs what they need; they ask?all the?DOTs in our nation to replace?signs, repaint?all road lanes with special paint, and dramatically?slow down speeds on roadways (OR allow them to park in the middle of an intersection:?https://lnkd.in/g8xN6c5y).

“Lines? Where We’re Going, We Don’t Need Lines or Signs”. Doc Brown

If JFK gave a Speech on Intelligent Infrastructure and Autonomy:

Autonomy Institute

The Autonomy Institute(501c3)?is a government, industry, academia and public alliance focused on accelerating the "Path to Commerce" for intelligent and autonomous systems. Over 200 organizations are engaged and supporting the policies, markets, jobs, and community benefits of autonomy to foster social and economic transformation.

Intelligent and Autonomous Infrastructure is the equivalent of the Eisenhower Interstate Highways. The Autonomy Institute collaborates with large infrastructure investors on the creation of $100+ million Public-Private Partnership programs. The intelligent infrastructure enables?the rapid and expansive deployment of rural broadband, NextG, edge computing, intelligent transportation systems, APNT, and smart grid devices. This infrastructure has substantial benefits to cities by?eliminating the digital divide and preparing communities?for Industry 4.0 solutions. The national deployment of this infrastructure will create millions of new jobs and generate billions in economic growth.

The Autonomy Institute is developing an "Autonomy Commerce Act" and an "All-Up" Autonomy program within the United States.

Great Dissertation from Atle Aalerud, University of Agder (UiA). "Industrial Perception of a Human World: A Hitchhiker's Guide to Autonomy" https://uia.brage.unit.no/uia-xmlui/handle/11250/2783564?locale-attribute=en

What is the source for this "the United States have the safest and most optimized air space?"? Who is #2 in your rankings?

The emphasis on productivity is important. This helps to stimulate new jobs and new industries. It encourages non-linear changes in how we produce goods and services. Productivity gains play a key role in international competition. Over the last 200 years public and private investments in infrastructure have played a key role in stimulating positive economic and social change in the United States. We are past due for our next sea change in transportation.
