A History of Texas (The Condensed Version)
As anyone who talks to me even briefly discovers, I have an immense affinity for this great state of Texas. It is the birthplace of myself and six generations of ancestors before me, the place where I attained an education (go Longhorns!), and the place where I've raised my family. With this being said, it's only natural that I would have an unbounded interest in the history of Texas, which is why I wanted to share a few things that most of you might not know about this great state.
Texas was settled by the descendants of those who crossed the Bering Strait 10,000 years ago. Who knows when they finally reached Texas? Probably several thousand years ago, but the timing is uncertain.
The next people group to arrive in Texas was the Spanish in the 1500s, beginning with Coronado and following with others. The southern Texas Spanish missions, to encourage proselyting of the native population and settlement of the region, began in the early 1700s.
The French also made a brief appearance in Texas through LaSalle's expedition and other ventures. After the French lost the French and Indian Wars to the British, the likelihood that France would ever play a large role in Texas largely faded away.
