#History Snippet & Trivia on Privacy
#Privacy is a very burning topic - And, I say this because people, companies and large conglomerates have got burnt, due to violations. MEGA fines and imprisonments have been a result - #GDPR, #UDHU (UN Declaration of Human Rights), Data Protection Directive (#DPD) to the Digital Persal Data Protection Act #DPDP in #India
But, as I was researching for the #History of privacy - The US Constitution made use of the 'word' Privacy for the first time, in 1789. But they did not define privacy, in any way.
However, it was in 1890 that Justice Brnadeis coined the term “The #RIGHT to Privacy” – Thereby demanding a constitutional right “To be left alone”.
And, the first complaint for #Violation of Privacy was filed by private citizens because the #Federal Agencies / #Feds and #SateActors would open peoples envelopes (snail-mail); to read its contents. They used the pretext of the #ColdWare era to justify their actions, and abuse their powers in the name of #NationalSecurity.
In1917 the first ruling on “Protection of #SealedEnvelopes / mail” was pronounced by Judge Lamar, against the opening of any mail by the #PostalDepartment, any #StateAgency or #GovernmentBody, as it breached the privacy of the recipient and the sender." It was a punishable offence.
We have now come a long way from opening letters, to #Espionage, to #RogueAgents, #DigitalCrime to #IdentityTheft, #IdentityCrisisof minors, #DarkWeb stores of stolen identities ...
Welcome to the interesting science of Privacy - Detailed story to follow soon.
