Radio telescopes have been used since 1997 to create very detailed images of the universe. The Navy has been using Sonar, emit loud, low-frequency tones, to map the ocean and keep water secure since WW II. Both of these technologies effectively use the idea of simply making use of an “echo”. When machine makes a “noise”, it sends sound waves into the environment around it. Those waves bounce off objects, and some of them reflect back to the object that made the noise. So why not use WIFI in closed environment to map the movement of humans? In fact, this is what researchers at University of California, Santa Barbara have done. This new technique allows an unprecedented invasion of privacy. Per the study, “Bad actors using smartphones can localize and track individuals in their home or office from outside walls, by leveraging reflections of ambient Wi-Fi transmissions.” Read the entire article at the link below.
