Kick doubt to the kerb!

Kick doubt to the kerb!

The UK's 1st National Black & Diverse Safeguarding Professionals Conference is happening in 4 days and I'm so ready! Everyday for over 8 months I've worked tirelessly to bring this event to life and the final week is here!

It's the first national event of its kind in the UK!

We’re SOLD OUT!

I am beyond excited to announce that all seats are officially sold out for our inaugural event! To add to the excitement, all exhibitor spaces are fully booked as well. We’ve even got the incredible George the Poet to kick off the day with his powerful spoken word performance and this event is co-signed by the West Midlands Mayor Richard Parker, I couldn’t be more thrilled!

To everyone who snagged a seat—I'm so excited to welcome you! I can’t wait to see your faces and share this experience with you. It’s going to be a day filled with insight, inspiration, and connection.

Just to reiterate—there are no more seats left! I’ve been receiving a lot of messages these past two weeks, and while I appreciate your enthusiasm, the final numbers are in, and it’s a wrap!

Looking forward to seeing you all very soon!

If you'd like to speak, exhibit or sponsor the 2025 event, express your interest here .

WORKPLACE EXIT STRATEGIES

I keep getting asked about my exit strategy from social work, and honestly, it’s bittersweet. I’ve stepped back from the frontline, but I’m not out here telling anyone else to do the same—yet, people keep coming to me with that question.

And I get it.

For some, the job is starting to feel like a weight that’s just too heavy to carry. The burnout, lack of support, feeling like you’re constantly swimming upstream—it all adds up.

I’ve been there.

I remember when I first started feeling it. I was drained, mentally and emotionally, questioning if I could keep going. I still loved what I did, but the pressure was starting to kill my passion. There were days where I felt like I didn’t even recognise myself. And that’s when the doubts started. Should I step away? What would that even look like? It was a scary place to be, like staring into the unknown, but I had to face it.

I went through my own search moment—trying to figure out if leaving meant I was giving up or if I was evolving into something new. That’s where I found the balance: even if you leave to start a social care business, you’re still making a huge contribution to the profession. You’re still helping people—just in a different way. It hit me that I didn’t have to pick between staying or leaving.

There was another way forward.

So, behind the scenes, I’ve been working on something special for those of you standing at that same crossroads. It’s for anyone who’s thinking about an exit strategy and not sure what the next step looks like. It’ll definitely help me sleep better at night knowing you’re finding your way! But let me be clear—this isn’t about encouraging everyone to leave. I know how important local authority workers are, so it’s about supporting you if you’re truly at that point.

The reward? It’s finding peace with whatever decision you make. I’ve found mine, & now I’m ready to share something that can help you find yours (if that's how you're feeling). Here's some questions to consider:

Here’s a list of questions to consider when planning your workplace exit strategy:

  • 1. What is your long-term career goal?

Are you leaving to pursue something specific, such as a new career, further education, or starting a business?

  • 2. Are your finances in order?

Do you have a financial buffer or plan to sustain yourself while transitioning? Have you considered the costs associated with starting something new?

  • 3. Have you created a professional exit timeline?

When is the best time to leave, and have you considered your notice period and any key deadlines or projects?

  • 4. Do you have a support network in place?

Are there mentors, colleagues, or professional networks you can lean on during this transition?

  • 5. What are the pros and cons of leaving your current role?

Are there unresolved issues or benefits you're walking away from? Have you weighed the potential risks?

  • 6. Are you mentally and emotionally ready for the transition? (It's not for the faint hearted let me tell you)

Have you prepared yourself for the challenges of leaving a familiar environment?

  • 7. Do you have a clear plan for your next steps?

What is your immediate action plan post-exit? Have you set short- and long-term goals for the future?

These questions can help guide your thoughts and actions to ensure your transition is smooth, intentional, and aligned with your future goals.

Overcoming Doubt: My Journey and Lessons for You

Doubt—it’s something we’ve all faced at some point, especially when stepping into the unknown. I experienced this firsthand when I made the decision to step back from over 10 years of frontline social work practice to fully embrace my coaching business. It wasn’t easy.

I questioned whether I was making the right choice, worried about leaving the security of a familiar role for the uncertainties of running my own coaching practice full-time. But, after facing my doubt head-on, it became one of the best decisions I’ve made.

Lately, in my coaching sessions, a recurring theme from my coachees has been doubt—particularly around making the right decisions and a sense of dependency on managers for validation. Many professionals second-guess themselves, unsure if they can trust their own instincts.

Here are a few valuable tips to tackle doubt and gain confidence:

1. Trust Your Expertise: You’ve built up skills over time. Believe in the experience you’ve gained—it’s what brought you to this decision point.

2. Self-Validation: Look within for approval instead of relying solely on external feedback. Self-reflection and self-trust are key.

3. Break Free from Co-Dependency: It’s important to value your managers' guidance, but remember—you are your own best advocate. Learn to rely on your instincts and judgment.

4. Take Small Steps: If you're feeling overwhelmed, break your goals into smaller, manageable steps. Each step forward builds confidence.

By acknowledging your doubt and taking action despite it, you’ll discover that moving forward opens doors to greater opportunities, just like it did for me. Doubt is natural—what matters is how you navigate through it.
